First off I'm not trying to start a pissing match but I just wonder why people care so much that people buy these phones and resell them for more $$$. You all don't get mad when car dealers do it. Hell every major store does it. Look at Wal-Mart they purchase merchandise then sell it for more. That's how things work. I just don't understand why certain people want to bust other's balls for trying to make a dollar.

They prey on the stupid, the rest of us get screwed.... again if we all just bid and never pay up, they will keep reupping on eBay and eventually the phone will only be worth cost.

The problem is with the people who will pay the reseller's prices. If they could just sit tight, there will be plenty of these $1000+ phones available to buy in a couple of months. But some people just have to be braggarts that they have the latest iPhone on launch day.

Scalpers in spirit contribute to an artificial scarcity and even further inflated prices beyond Apple's already quite hefty demands.

Not really a hard concept to understand why some people feel this is scummy.
Yeah and I understand that but car dealers do the same thing. We all should get mad at them for buying a car at the auction for $10k and selling it for 15k. We should all be mad that he's not selling it for 10k right?

How is the rest getting screwed? Cause you didn't want to stay up til 2 am to preorder?

Yeah I actually have one I ordered last night I now have an s8 I think I'm gonna go ahead and get the iPhone 8. So why does it make it wrong for me to sell mine on craigslist and make a few bucks? My time staying up til 2am and preordering isn't worth anything? And also being I purchased the phone doesn't that make it my property? Can't I ask whatever I want for my property?

They prey on the stupid,
i think they prey on the rich.

paying $1800 vs $1200 is absolutely nothing to someone who wears a $25000 watch and $3000+ suits every single day.

n o t h i n g.

and they're just telling their assistants "hey, i want that.. get me one" ..and the people just go get one for them.. not even saying "hey, it's $400 more than retail.. are you ok with that?"

i mean, dude just got done spending $600 for lunch.. you think he really cares?

scalpers aren't 'preying' on them so much.. they're leeching off them.
like mosquitos

[edit]
not meaning to imply ALL buyers of these inflated priced phones will be millionaires.. just a lopsided percentage of them are likely to be rich to wealthy.

Scalpers are low lifes in my opinion.

I couldn’t care less about the fools who buy off them, it is the fact they are taking stock away from people who could of bought the product for RRP.
So do you also think the same way about car dealers?

They take away opportunities from people to buy one.
Ok well those people should've been up at 2am to preorder just like everyone else that wanted one. Or they will have to pay more simple as that. No reason hating on someone that spent there time to make a dollar.

Are resellers looked down upon only in the iPhone market or in all markets in general?

As an example, what about industries where it’s part of the culture?

Yeah and I understand that but car dealers do the same thing.

The difference in your example is that we can't normally buy directly from car manufacturers, the only option we have is to buy from dealers. Hell, dealerships are fighting like crazy to keep Tesla from cutting their middle man scheme out of the picture and selling directly to customers instead.

If we COULD buy directly from car manufacturers for cheaper, yet the scalpers dealers bought up all the cars just so they could artificially inflate prices and gouge customers further then yes... I'd say they were complete scum the same way I think of iPhone scalpers if they do it excessively.

The X is not a limited commodity in the big picture. Apple will sell as many as they can as fast as they can for as long as they can.

Scalpers are not denying anyone anything except having it RIGHT NOW at MSRP.

It's a phone. Relax. Plenty will be available in due time.

And make no mistake, I want one. And I've set my sites on March.

I never will understand the angst.

a retailer like Walmart is a completely different model than scalping. companies enter distribution agreements with Walmart at a set price and consumers can expect to pay $X for Y

car dealers, as much as i hate them, are still retail models. a closer proxy might Uber’s demand based pricing strategy. yet there are multiple times now where Uber has been criticized for their demand driven pricing in times of emergency and the company has refunded or suspended demand pricing as a result

a scalper is like a gas station raising prices to $20 / gallon during the hurricanes to capitalize on short-term, supply limitation driven need

sure you can classify that behavior as a dude trying to ‘make a buck’, but you’d be stupid if you cannot understand why many would find that type of behavior off putting

also, to somehow equate a retail business model to scalping? ridiculous. the underlying drivers and economics are completely different

Some of you guys are full of it. if you have your house for sale for $500,000 and 2 people want it , one offers you market value of $500k and was there the second you listed it, the other offers you $600k the next day, who are you going to sell it to? get off your high horses.

we're not talking about bread and clean water here, they are friggin' iPhones.

Not only that, Apple themselves do it as well in a way. Next year, the X will cost less than it does now. Early adopters pay more for the same thing, just as the rich dude on eBay pays more to have it now.

They’re not even making less stock available as the same number of phones will make their way to end users. There will be available stock at higher prices to those that want a phone at that moment rather than waiting for inventory at retail stores. Big deal. Bunch of whiners on here.

Selling for a profit driven by supply and demand is just business in its simplest form. I say blame the idiots paying stupid money for already overpriced products rather than those offering them.

Yes, car dealers are lowlifes, are you seriously debating this?
[doublepost=1509177756][/doublepost]Where I come from used car salesman is a byword for sleazy money-grabbing b*stard.

and if the house value drops from $600k to $500k in three months time then i would agree with your example. however under most municipal tax regulations, the property value likely just increased due to the $600k transaction. in most normal circumstances the value is retained for a couple of years until another transaction occurs

an iphone does not magically appreciate in value just cause some guy pays $2,000 for it on ebay. the useful life of these phones is what... 2 years max?

Which is exactly like saying that I am screwed paying the regular Apple price beause there are stupids around that are willing to pay Apple its insane prices.
