I’ve heard a few times in the forum that the HomePod has the A8-chip which is way overpowered for a speaker, but why using if it’s not necessary at all. Are they future proofing it for updates?

It will not be over powered when it starts to be used for face recognition for HomeKit security cams.

There is no such thing as "overpowered" Do you realize everything that chip does? Also they have added alot of functionality since the initial release.
