Good lord, why are there always the crazy few Apple fans in here ALWAYS trying to blame the thread starter for overreacting to a very basic (missing) feature?

Apple needs to have profiles. It needs it. It's on the top of damn near every "wish list" I've seen for the iPhone and it's something my phone in 2005 could do.

Stop the excuses, stop the "Oh well how long does it take you to unlock your phone, enter your pin, click your settings app, turn off notifcations, and then enable full ring?"

Really? We should have to do that multiple times a day if we're going into work, meetings, church, wherever one may want something other than full-ring/vibrate etc?

Come on now, it's silly. Apple is way behind on this and it's just as bad as them not having MMS or copy/paste for as long as they did. Actually, probably even worse.

<rant>

Thank you! I completely agree. This forum is always full of excuse makers, it sickens me. Nothing's ever a problem for them. And I'm not just talking about ommited features on an OS, I mean, some people here just don't expect anyone to complain about anything.

Anyways, I agree... There needs to be some sort of profiles. I like all notifications/sounds on usually, but when I'm in a place where I have to be quiet, I want everything on vibrate so I can still feel it when I have a notification or call. And at night, my phone is next to me, charging, and I want EVERYTHING silent, because I'm a light sleeper.

On Android, there are hundreds of solutions for this. On iOS, you have to manually do everything.

On iOS, you have to manually do everything.

You just disproved your own argument. If it can be manually done, then isn't that itself a solutions?

Yeah, maybe in later builds it could be a bit easier to access and customize, but you still have to realize that it is very possible to achieve what the OP wants right now.

All you have to do is explore your settings and make your own adjustments.

Again, problem solved.

Actually the area we live in is pretty safe; this was pretty rare. I'm not sure who it was - it may have been quite innocuous. But you never know!

I'd like to get her some pepper spray, but it's illegal in the UK! And self-defence classes are of limited use for a 16 year old..

Judging by your initial post I'd say that it was pretty late at night when this happened. If so, why does a 16 year old need to be out that late?!?!?

Yeah, blame the woman/girl. How dare she be outside after dark? She probably would've been asking for it anyway, being out late out night, wearing some kind of suggestive clothing, right?

This post was about phone settings, not about violence against women. And, yes, there should be profiles. But, until there are, it's easy enough to fix the issue. Not the ideal, but it's doable.

Either you're both daft, or you didn't what we were saying. No one here is the typical "Apple can do no wrong" apologist". I agree with you that the Apple apologists are silly, but there are none here. Save your arguments for the patent trolling threads. We were just saying that it isn't Apple's fault if the OP's sister gets raped. If you disagree with that, then you're a pretty huge idiot.

If pepper spray isn't viable, it's best to start researching what is legal where you live.
Also, why would self-defense be of limited utility to a 16 year old? She's not too young to learn these skills. After all these skills will be of use to her as she gets older too or do you think attackers ignore 20-something year old women?

I don't think I'd use profiles per se, but I wish more apps would have the option to set a schedule for notifications, or for Apple to bake this into the notifications menu. For example, Echofon only notifies me about Twitter mentions and DMs from 7am-11pm every day. Unfortunately, Facebook has no such settings.

Again, another person who blindly flies into a rage without the slightest clue as to what's going on. He was suggesting that there are other measures to keep his sister safe other than profile settings on iOS. Please take your entry level women's studies class anger somewhere where it isn't so apparent.

I know this is not the answer you are looking for but get an iHome.

When my phone is docked at night all sms/email/app notifications are vibrations while calls will still ring out loud. I am a light sleeper but never hear the small vibrations from e-mails at night.

Well, gee. I know of a way to solve the OP's problem, but is telling him going to "sicken you" for being an excuse?

OP - Get the app named Boxcar. Forward your mail to it (in your mail's web settings) so that it gets a copy the same time that your phone gets a copy. Then, turn off the mail notification sound in iOS and turn on the boxcar sounds and let it 'ding' you when you have mail. The reason: Boxcar has quiet hours that you can program.

Then, just leave your ringer on loud all night. Boxcar will leave you alone when you get mail and phone calls will still come through.

Of course everyone on this site will mock you. But I agree, this feature would be nice.

It's not apples fault if his sister gets raped at night. If he really needs his phone on because his sister is walking around at night and might get raped then he should leave it on so it rings. It's just as easily for her to call the police. Blaming it on apple is just stupid.

That would be a useful feature.

I don't have landline. I and my housemates are grad students scraping to get by as it is; we have no landline or cable, as we don't need the extra (and completely unnecessary, in the case of the landline) expense. Doesn't matter if it comes in package deal if you can't afford (or need) the original package in the first place.

A lot of people I know have only cell phones, no landlines.

The iPhone has always lagged behind the times as a phone. It's a wonderful portable information device, don't get me wrong.....it's just that it's mediocre in the phone functionality department. Visual voicemail is awesome, but the feature alone doesn't make the the phone part of the iPhone somehow a better phone.

You should buy a new phone immediately. Like, today. If tonight your sister gets a dirty look from some skank or the barman gives her the wrong amount of change she may need to contact you. And if you're unreachable after already being alerted to the inherent dangers of owning an iPhone then you will have to live with yourself, unable to scapegoat an evil multinational for your sister being 20p out of pocket.

Turning mail sounds off takes 4 taps from home screen.

Wouldn't use profiles, but would like to see the ability to turn on/off such as mail sounds/wifi/bluetooth etc from the pulldown notification area in some future version of iOS5

OK, while ignoring the terrible example the OP gave with his sister-story (specifically his follow up scenarios) - I believe his point is 100% valid.

Ask any service provider, they will ALL agree that land line service is dying off, going the way of cursive and shorthand. So many more people will have only a mobile over time.

I too have issues with IOS lack of profiles or alert priority. Having to choose between sleeping undisturbed and being out of touch vs being there should a situation arise, at the expense of sleep isn't a fantastic choice.

I wish there was an option to have a "do not disturb mode" where emails, APP alerts are muted (entirely), and a text / call priority list. The following people / groups will ring you, while the party animals, associates across the globe, and people who aren't high up on your list cannot bother you.

I have to say, going entirely off the map for a decent nights sleep isn't working well for me, then there are those days where you forget to turn airplane mode off...

Wow - so many things disturbing about the posts here, like the idea that weapons increase personal security rather than decreasing it, or that it is blameworthy to exercise the absolute right to walk the streets at whatever time one sees fit because a criminal might attack you....

In any case, for other reasons, I agree profiles would be a good idea.

I don't know if there is an app like tasker on iphone but I use it on Android - basically set up a rule where it automatically switches off mobile data and wifi between 12:30am and 7am. That way I can get any phone calls but not be bothered by any emails or other notifications.

If your using a GSM iPhone why not just turn off cellular data.

This is just silly. Yes, it's possible. It's also possible for us to sew all of our own clothes, but no one is advocating that...

I would hope you'd know that there is a monumental difference between what you just said and the solution I gave the OP. We are talking about a phone in 2011. Not a farm in the 1700s.

Who's the silly one?

Oh yeah. That's right. Not me.

It's not a perfect solution but in IOS 5 you can have custom sounds. For email I setup a silent sound and the phone vibrates for email notifications. Its works pretty well but I agree with the OP, sound profiles would be nice. As previously said, Boxcar also works pretty well.

This is the biggest thing I miss from my BlackBerry. It took a whopping two clicks to switch from one profile to another. So at bed time every night, it was simple to go from "Normal" to "Phone only."

Put this in the "too late" category, but my wife and I use MobileMe for this type of notification. With the phones set to silent we can make them sound an alert tone. Nice for when it's in her purse and she doesn't feel it vibrate.

Oops. Forgot to add that with it being offered as a paid service there is little incentive to make it part of iOS. ;)

No offense OP but this is a silly thing to get mad about. Its not Apples fault you shut your ringer off, or don't bother to change your notification settings. Apple does provide you what you want. Go to General -> Notifications and turn off emails and such. Yes profiles may be nice but they aren't an option at the moment.

The phone has no way of knowing what type of call your sister is making, no phone will so how is it supposed to only let emergencies ring through? A profile isn't going to do that it'll let any call through.

Not to mention, as always I'm sure many people on here bitching have not gone to http://www.Apple.com/feedback

Macrumors is not, and never will be a site that Apple looks at for feedback. If you want a feature, request it.
