Yes...that is the info I used when setting up my moms gmail. It works fine for her. Hope you sorted it out.

I use Mail with Gmail, and ocassionally Mail will pop open a window asking me for my password. I have no idea why it does this. It seems arbitrary. The even weirder thing is, every time I then enter my password, it just pops the same window open again, as if it didn't accept my password. So I hit the 'Cancel' button to make the window go away, and it takes my Gmail account offline. Then I right click on my gmail mailbox in Mail, and take it back online, and then it works fine - without prompting me for my password. Anyone have this issue? I think it's got more to do with Mail than with Gmail, because I seem to remember it happening before I ever had Gmail.
Come to think of it, my mom has been complaining of the same things. However, it only happens when she is replying to an email. The email will jump right into her outbox and she goes to reopen it to send it again and it prompts her for her password. She typed it in and it then sent. However she wasn't offline or anything. Very strange.

Same here... ever since a couple of months ago Mail always asks me for the password when I try to send an email.. Sometimes it works, sometimes it gives me a server error.

Also, I have two GMail accounts. For some reason with one of them I can't send large attachments.

It's really quite infuriating.

Don't know what you all are talking about. I have two gmail accounts that I manage through mail.app using POP access. Has worked like a charm.

Me too... It's worked fine for me for almost a year...

What's the point in everyone replying to say theirs is working fine. Rub it in or what
I had/still have the same problem as the original poster and would really appreciate some help or actual advice in this matter (and yes i have followed the configuration instructions to the letter the three times i've deleted my account and re-set all the info). The message i am getting is:
"Unable to verify ssl server pop.googlemail.com"
"Mail was unable to verify the identity of this server...
You may be attempting to connect to a computer that is pretending to be pop.googlemail.com"
It asks if i want to continue anyway, which i do, but will not go online and stays in 'working offline' mode. I cannot 'get mail' or send anything.
Can anyone help?

Well, like I said in my original post, when mine goes offline and won't accept my password, I just right click on the mailbox for that account and select "Take Online", and for some reason it then goes online and I usually can retrieve and send mail with the account at that point. Sometimes I have to do this a couple times before it works, but it seems to be my only workaround for this strange problem. I hope it works for you, so at least you can use your account with Mail. If not, sorry.:(

i know that gmail requires you to re-enter your password every 2 weeks if it is automatically entered somewhere (such as the gmail notifier i have on my windows pc). perhaps it is related to this. i don't understand why if you click cancel and then try to open up the app again it doesn't bother you.

technology can be strange sometimes...

I didn't know that about gmail. That might very well be what's going on, and it's nice to finally have some light shed on this weird behavior!

You may have misunderstood my description. When I hit 'Cancel', I'm not actually closing 'Mail'. I'm just closing the small Mail window that is prompting me for my password. Mail stays open, and at that point if I were to click on 'Get Mail' button, it would again prompt me for my password. But instead of clicking on that button, I cancel that window and I right click on the mailbox whose account I want to access, take it back online, and then click 'Get Mail', and then it works.

I hope that's a clearer description of what I'm doing. Anyway, thanks for that bit of info on gmail. I'm gonna start writing it in iCal each time it prompts me, so I can see if it's happening every two weeks.

None of that is working for me. Same old ssl error. I've given in and just downloaded Thunderbird, it's retrieving all my mail with the exact same settings as i put in Mail... go figure

pop.googlemail.com is NOT Gmail's POP server. It's pop.gmail.com. Make sure that the SMTP server is smtp.gmail.com. Make sure that the POP port number is 995 and the SMTP port number is 587. Also, make sure that your usename is "username@gmail.com"

Edit: SMTP port number shoule be 587, not 995 and the POP port number should be 995, not 465.

i get similar prbms
it is frustrating

occasionally i'll get the password issue
then randomly mail won't be able to get messages off the g-mail server

each time i go back and double check the preferences in 'mail' and they are fine
restart the computer & the prgm and occasionally it works- and sometimes it won't for a day or so -- who should i report these prbms to - gmail or mail?
(aka google or apple?)

When I get asked for my password with gmail, I just hit cancel and let my keychain deal with it. That has always worked.

I do occassionally get connection problems with gmail, but they aren't that long lasting. Can you ever connect?

On the account info screen, where it says Outgoing Mail Server (SMPT) it should say (it does on mine anyway) smtp.gmail.com:yourusername on the drop down menu.... Incidentally, I don't use port 587 and it still works fine.

Yeah dude, that is why I have sucked it up and used Entourage. I have grown used to it and it does what it needs. No problems.

Sometimes it doesn't work, but more often than not it does. On the occasion it doesn't, I usually wait 5 minutes and relaunch Mail.app and it works.

Mail just sucks.

My Apple Mail program seems to work fine with my gmail account, BUT I still think Mail is a crappy program. If you're looking for a very simple mail client it might be ok, but it is nowhere near as good as Outlook on Windows.

Why doesn't Apple make some real, feature-rich, business apps instead of these over-simplified toys (Mail, iCal, Address Book, etc)????

Because there are often competing products, which cost money. You know, Outlook does exist on the Mac. It's called Entourage.

I browsed through this topic but didn't find any mention of this, but in the Gmail POP & Forwarding settings you have to enable POP otherwise it will not work.

Very simple and obvious, but that's what had me stumped for about 30 seconds until I got it working.
