I have a 2013 MBP Retina and within activity monitor it says that 2GB of my 8GB total is going to the Messages app.

It also states that Gmail.com within Safari is taking up 1.5GB of RAM.

What gives? Why so much? How to bring it down?
 
It is probably cached data, and will free up as the OS needs it.

Are you page swapping?
 
Page swapping as in going from tab to tab frequently?
