Why does Messages use 2GB of RAM?

I have a 2013 MBP Retina and within activity monitor it says that 2GB of my 8GB total is going to the Messages app.

It also states that Gmail.com within Safari is taking up 1.5GB of RAM.

What gives? Why so much? How to bring it down?

It is probably cached data, and will free up as the OS needs it.

Page swapping as in going from tab to tab frequently? If so yes.

But I ask cause my Mac is super slow. Super slow.
