Really annoying me, right now as a type I have nothing open apart from Safari theres no copying, watching going on etc but the HDD seems like it's busy doing something.

Is the HDD on it's way out or is this just the way of the HDD in 27"s?

    It's a 1TB HDD and I've used about 150gb.

I got my 27" a few weeks back and the HDD sounds like a really old school drive, "Tick tick tick, Drum drum drum" Worst I've heard in years. Hell, my crappy work Dell PC is quieter!

I spoke with the Apple store and they confirmed that they will swap it out with a different type, and that the 1TB disks are suffering from this.

I have heard a 27" 1TB at a friends (2009 model) run super silent so I know that this behaviour is not normal, and not acceptable in a high end product like iMac.

No stress or bad blood, just get it swapped. I'm sure there is a large volume of folk doing the same.

iMac's drive is more easily hearable than normal ATX towers' as iMac is at the same level as your head (well, at least near) so of course the noises are louder. ATX tower are usually on the floor under your table which means that the noise has longer way to travel and there may be obstacles on the road.

1TB Seagates are known to have this issue. WD and Hitachi should be quiet. In fact, noisiness is quite infamous issue with Seagate drives. As you said, I would call Apple and get it swapped.
