So the battery will be at 52% when I close the lid and let it sleep. When I come back later and open it, it'll be at about 55%. Why does it slightly increase when it clearly isn't being charged? Is this normal?

Because the estimate is based on what is running.

The estimate of battery is based on what you are doing at the time when you let it sleep and reboot those processess will take a while to impact on your estimate.
