This just started happening within the last couple weeks. Have not had this happen for the past couple years of always on display

At night, if I wake up in the middle of the night and glance over at my charging stand to see the time, the screen is completely black. It used to always be on and dimmed (portrait mode, not bedside clock mode).

The same thing happens when I’m watching TV or playing a game for a while. I’ll glance over at the phone to see the time, but the screen is unexpectedly off.

I have adaptive power mode disabled. Always-on display is on. Auto-brightness is off.

What is going on? iPhone Air on 26.1.

This never happened to me on previous phones (15 Pro and 16 Pro).

Is there a setting I’m missing somewhere? It’s driving me crazy.

I thought it always behaved that way? At least in my case, I've always seen the AOD go off after it has been idle for some time.

Simlar thread:

From Apple:
The display automatically turns off when iPhone is either face down or obstructed from view, not near a paired Apple Watch, when a CarPlay session begins, while Continuity Camera is in use, while Low Power Mode is on, while Sleep Focus is on, or at your usual bedtime.

The problem is that it happens when none of those conditions are met. Such as when it’s sitting next to me on the couch for an extended period of time if I’m watching a movie or something (with my watch on). The screen should not be turning off in that situation.

I have had it turn off when in a different room. Then I notice it would turn on as I approached which I thought was pretty cool. But should not be turning off when it’s sitting right next to me. I never lay it face down.

To weigh in on this, I've noticed some odd screen related behaviours the last fortnight or so. I've not been able to pin point exactly what has been causing them with the exception of one. I've been finding that the screen won't wake if it goes off without pressing a physical button (volume, camera, lock etc), but have also noticed that when i'm on a phone call (as in, phone to my ear), the screen goes off as expected, but then it just stays black and I can't end the call when I take it away from my head. The person on the other line ends the call, the screen stays black for around 10 seconds, then it comes back on. It doesn't do this for every call, but I'd say a good 50% of them. Restarting the phone has not made the issue go away. I've also noticed similar to the OP where the AOD goes off even when I'm near/next to the phone. Again, pressing a physical button is the only way to get it to come back on.

I am running 26.1 on a 17 Pro Max for reference, but seems like it might be a bug 26.1.

I haven’t had that happen. Mine always comes back with a tap of the screen. But I am also thinking this probably started with the 26.1 release.
