iPhone XS
W x H = 2.79" x 5.65"
Bezel thickness = 0.167"

iPhone 11 Pro
W x H = 2.81" x 5.67"
Bezel thickness = 0.177"

The bezel this year is almost imperceptibly thicker. According to multiple sources, Apple adopted LG for iPhone OLED panels this year. Perhaps Apple is allowing greater engineering tolerance to accomodate two suppliers. Any other reasonable guesses?

^^pretty much that. Footprint increases by fractions of millimeters, bezels fatten to keep active screen area the same

I'd guess that the phones needed to be physically larger because of the battery and additional cameras, and the thicker bezels are just a natural consequence of keeping the screen size the same.

Yet, the iPhone 11 did not increase even though Apple added an additional camera and bigger battery.

To put things into perspective, the device thickness increased by 5%. The bezel increased by 0.7%.

Take a ballpoint pen and draw a line. The bezel increased by 1/4 of that thickness. That's not a battery or camera increase.

LCD require a backlight and i'm assuming the circuit they are using requires a bezel thickness else they would trim it. For OLED, i'm assuming their logic board doesn't require this.

This is all assumption.
