Why does the 6S cost $250 more than the SE?

- The iPhone 6(S) debuted first.
- The iPhone 6(S) is Apple's flagship device.
- The price point of Apple's flagship mobile device hasn't changed since the iPhone 3G(S) in 2009.
- Based on all of the above, the 6(S) isn't "more expensive" than the SE., as the 6(S) preceded the SE.
- Rather, the SE is cheaper than the 6(S) because the SE proceeded the 6(S).
- It's a matter of consumer perception--all pricing is.
Similarly, when Ford introduced the "Model A." One doesn't compare the Model T to the Model A. One compares the Model A to the Model T.
A coffee at Starbucks costs a couple of dollars. Their espresso drinks are the same price as elsewhere. Cheaper than high end shops.
I paid $149.00 more not $250.00 more or $549.00 total for the iPhone 6s not $649.00. It was discounted with a promotion that is still going on with Verizon.
That obviously is much better than $649 especially AFTER the SE was released but there are still a good number of folks that would not bite at that price now either, considering an extra $150 still is not a drop in the bucket since they could get by with the SE.
Yes, Apple recouped most of the R&D when it was the flagship 2.5 years ago.
But Apple bought more than year with this update ... It will last as long as the 6s which is at least 2.5 more years on the US market, and who knows how much longer on the international market. Apple was selling the 4s and 5c until this past February in India, so that suggests the SE could hang around for up to 5 more years, and it will most definitely get a lot cheaper during that time as well.
They are both good phones. Just the 6s has the below for the extra cost...

Agreed. I own both. Weird reading all the defensive comments in an apple forum. People are getting spun up. Insecurity.
None of these features mean anything to me and therefore I don't want to pay 'extra' to have them. Apple have become aware of the fact that some people simply don't want to pay for stuff they don't need. Those people are more shrewd than cheap IMHO.
Personally, I don't like the awkward shape of the 6/6S and I don't like the size of the 6+/6S+, this makes the SE perfect for me.

I'm trying to wrap my head around what could possibly make the 6S cost almost 65% more than the SE. Does this mean the 7 will have a lower price point? I just can't see Apple dropping the price on their flagship phone.

The 6S has Force touch. SE does not.
No I don't but some people do which is why they buy it for the price they do. I don't believe that even $50 would be worth the difference, to me anyway. I guess Apple needed a figure for the SE that would be acceptable and choose that difference to be $250.
I'm in the UK and the mobile phone tariffs are different. I buy my phones outright, unlocked, and pay just £15 per month ($21 US).
My point is that depending on which carrier you use in the UK, you are likely still paying for technology you don't use, like CDMA radios.
And being in the UK I pay for the privilege of using CDMA radios while not utilising them? Is that your point? If part of my monthly tariff of a mind blowing $21 is including CDMA radios then so be it.
I'm glad I can make the choice not to pay for the 'extra' features of the 6/6s/+'s, I can't do anything about paying the premium for CDMA radios, whatever they are.
Don't think about costs by component, think about costs by new factories you have to build for the phone. Absolutely everything that goes inside an SE, we've seen in other phones before. Even the A9 chip, while only six months old, is still not new anymore. The factory already exists and can easily make a few million more of the exact same chips. And the iPhone 5 body is now four years old. Without the SE the factory lines would be worthless. The whole body and display assembly is essentially for free, while the 6s claims the only thing that's changed is everything. And that's exactly what makes everything expensive.

I just see the SE as if its on a 6mo discount promo because in 6 months the 6S will be $549 and I'm thinking apple will keep the SE price the same when the iPhone 7 comes out. Apple really wants to expand into indian/chinese markets and this is the perfect price point for those markets.
You can buy one now for $ 549 from Verizon on a monthly plan, then buy it out right a few days later if you wish. I did.
In a few months it will be last gen tech and considering a lot of tech in it is already last gen that will really date a relatively new device. I don't think this will matter much to the people that like the device but to people that like the latest and greatest....well I wouldn't want several year old tech that has already been succeeded by new tech in a new device.

You're right and you're right.
It will be "outdated" in 6 months, but by that logic, we could never buy any tech.
The fact is, though, that for most folks buying the SE, that doesn't matter. They're first time users, people who wanted the form factor more than the specs, or people who hadn't upgraded in 3-4 years.
All while one could have gotten an iPhone which they rather prefer over android and Windows smartphones on the cheap (witness the 5c) can now have their cake and eat it too which suffices without spending what Apple's flagships warranted for cost.
