to capture your feelings towards it.. I don't know. I'm planning on moving from the 14 max, which neither had capture or action buttons, and it seemed to work fine for me to the 16 max.

Much like using the volume buttons as a shutter button, it makes composing your photo easier and better rather than tapping the screen.

supposedly it functions similar to a "real" camera, you "lightly" push the button, it focuses and then you push the button to take the photo - I like that idea being a DSLR guy

I can't believe I didn't know this. I thought it just opened the camera app. I've always wanted a button to snap a photo so I wouldn't have to lose critical seconds by needing to reposition my hands.

well, I said "supposedly" ;) - it is what I gathered from the various articles/threads here, and yes, I would expect that when you touch it it will launch the camera app.

Oh it doesn't appear to do the half press to focus thing. I don't think that iPhone button even has a half press mode. You still have to tap the screen to focus, but at least you can press the button to activate the "shutter".

That's good enough for me. If I'm not walking around with a full DSLR kit, I often have a compact mirrorless with me. The iPhone is for quick and sudden shots and I'm not worried about it being perfect.

Imho it would be a missed opportunity to not have some function associated with “half press”, but we shall see…
And I agree with the iPhone as camera usage as you state.
Still not getting a new iPhone this year ;). Got my 13PM replaced under AC+ a few months ago so battery will be just fine for at least another year, or longer

We will definitely know why in about a month when Apple will tell us why they did it and what feature it will add. For know all we can do is guess

I would have said this if Apple had actually put it in an ergonomic position. As it stands if the case maker rumours are true they've added the capture button as a mirror to the power button, noether of which you can comfortably tap with an index finger in landscape.
