iPhone Why does the YouTube app only lets us view 720? Videos

I downloaded it and it only shows 720 ? On the 4.7 iPhone
But I thought if it can record 4K couldn't we view 4K YouTube?

Your phone can't display anything higher than the native resolution. If anything the compression that YouTube uses causes the problems your experiencing.
