I assume the "current weather" you get when you start the weather app on the iPhone wasn't built from a forecast, but from the data being read at weather stations a few minutes ago.

Most likely! No doubt the data is collected from the relevant stations a few minutes ago. However, the actual data was obviously not collected a few minutes ago! Do you really think that data is collected every minute?! What is more, in order for data to be collected that is relevant to every location you may decide to visit, how many stations do you think will be required? As we know, the Met Office has 45 sites throughout the UK.

Just accept the facts as they are and try not to expect too much. If you are looking for information regarding a location you are at that moment traveling to, you don't need a forcast, you need to phone the local info center and ask.

Tie some seaweed to your phone, go outside.

If the seaweed is wet it's raining, if its moving around a lot, it's windy.......

Apple seems to have a lot of trouble with data and information though. It's similar to the Maps fiasco. They're good at designing and building pretty things that work well, but when it comes to stocking those apps/services with the right information and data (which must be constantly updated and improved) they fall down on the job. I think it's because of their startup mentality. They move people around to different projects as soon as something is finished - there seems to be very little energy put into upkeep and improvement. The weather app might have been great in 2007 but it's barely been changed since then, and the information certainly hasn't improved.
As mentioned earlier, while the underlying issue is kind of similar--the data used in the app--in the case of the Weather app the data comes through Yahoo! from The Weather Channel, so it doesn't really involve Apple that much (unlike in the case of the new Maps app where Apple itself is providing the data). So, even though there's certainly room for improvement in both the app and the data, the data part itself isn't something that Apple has been responsible for (aside from choosing to use that particular data).

But that's just it -- they should either allow users to choose the source of the weather data, or choose some better data providers, especially for international users. It doesn't even seem like it would be remotely hard to do - it would just take a little attention.

Why doesn't Apple provide a more accurate weather app?

If you live in the UK it's best to download the official MET Office app. It's much more reliable and gives you more information.

What a dumb app. I just want to see the current weather but I don't know how. It looks like some genius thought that when you open a weather app the first thing that you want to see is the forecast for the day and not the current weather.

I like palm I think that updated a little weather icon in your calendar so when you book outings or picnics, you'll have some idea of the weather. Wish iOS had this. Would be a great addition to see that next time you've got a date, you can dress for the weather

I'd also like them to allow us to choose our default browser, maps, mail, and a slew of other settings and apps, but I don't see that happening anytime soon either.

I havent had any problems whatsoever with the stock Weather app. It gives accurate readings everytime in San Diego. Maybe it's just where you guys are, maybe Yahoo!'s coverage is spotty there?

Just speculating! :D:cool:
