I decided to use Clean Up on Photos for the first time on my iPhone 16 Pro Max. It's running the iOS 18.1 Developer Beta. It turns out that that function had to be "installed" since for whatever reason it had not been installed during the iOS 18.1 update I performed.

So it said it was loading the feature, but it just stayed there. A quick internet search revealed it would only load the feature while on Wi-Fi.

So why wouldn't Apple just add a pop-up or alert or whatever saying so? What if I wasn't a tech-savvy user who quickly decided to do an internet search?

You're on a developer beta, either you are a tech-savvy user or you should use the release version like everyone else and wait for things like this to be fixed...
He's got a point though. Pretty sure it's going to be the same way in the shipping version of 18.1. You have to opt into Apple Intelligence and let it download/install some more stuff. Apparently Apple isn't telling us we need to be on Wi-Fi to do that...or it's a bug. (Or maybe it's tied to the 'Allow More Data on 5G' cellular data setting?)

@Rafagon, sounds like feedback to give Apple via the Feedback app.

I did it. Hope this will help someone in the future.

I wish I had taken a screenshot of what transpired after I attempted to download the Clean Up Tool.

I wonder why Apple wouldn't just include it with the iOS update. Maybe the code or LLMs or whatever take up a lot of space and they don't want to have unnecessary code eating up storage and the iPhones of folks who may not have a lot of free storage space. Especially if they're not going to use the Clean Up tool.

I was addressing the missing alert saying you need to be on WiFi, that sounds like the kind of thing which will be added in before the release version.
