It used to, for at least a few weeks after I purchased the iPhone 4 on launch day.

If I got a new email and wasn't in the app it would make a bing sound and show a number next to the app.

Now it will NOT update unless I go into the app.

What's with that? And no, no settings have been changed (fetch etc)

Three options here;

Disable push/fetch altogether for the account. Respring or restart your phone. Enable push/fetch for the account. Or simply delete the email account, restart your phone and set it up again. Either of the two should do the trick.

If all fails, Restore it in iTunes and make sure you set it up as a new iPhone once you're done. (Restoring from an old backup will simply re-apply the errors again)

Even though you didn't "change" anything, you should still check.

Make sure it's not setup to fetch "manually"
