why doesn't the mic pick up sound from the speakers?

Hello, this isn't a problem however I am very curious as to how/why.

Whenever I facetime or skype, the person on the other end does not hear any sound coming out of my speakers, no matter how loud I play music the other person can still hear me but not the music.

    Why is this?!

I realise that the microphone is located in the left speaker, is it due to the microphone being below the speaker or something?

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro by the way.

Well it sounds like the noise cancelling is working, but that sounds unrealistic that they cannot hear it on any volume.

So if you're speaking over the top of music, they can only hear your voice? Or is it just when the music is playing alone?

Lol, it's about 3 cm above the escape button.

Mic location depends what model MacBook/air/pro you have.

Yeah, but I have an AG model, thus there is that thing on the left of the camera, which looks like the mic holes on my iMac, but as I I just tested it, it seems to be the light sensor.
