apple should provide developers with dynamic icon APIs..i think the possibilities are limitless..imagine that the american express app displayed your current balance (people would have to lock their phone!), sports apps displayed scores like a stock ticker, etc

of course, all of these things could be turned off by the user if they wanted

Great idea! Seems plausible too since Apple likes to solve all problems with their own custom APIs rather than giving developers free reign over the phone... I'd be all for it! :)

I bet apple's ios team wanted to build this in, but the idea got trashed by Steve Job's paranoia about battery life.

While I too wish that the weather icon would update itself, you would run into the same battery issues as you do with push email. The app would need to retrieve data from some weather site at intervals to accurately display the weather.

Calendar = 1-31 images for 1-31 days of the month.. and only updates once a day

Weather = -XX to +XXX images for all of the different temps.. plus it would need to update itself at a given interval, which uses data and battery life, and people would complain, and then they would have to code in a turn off auto update feature, and then people would want more than one temperature showing, so they'd have to find a way to show two temperatures. Then people wouldn't know what temp it was showing, so it would need to say the location name.

..... can o worms that there feature is! Though it would be nice.

Bingo! Nailed it - I believe this is the right answer.

it would be cool if it just showed the temp of your current location.

if you don't know where you are, see a psychologist.

Check out the app current temperature. It pushes a temperature badge. I put it in a folder with some other apps on my home page so i can see the temp on that page.
