Why don't Apple protect their software?

Apple isn't entirely free from the impact of piracy. If a large percentage of the Mac-using market got OS X or iLife free off a friend rather than buying it, their revenue from software would disappear.

Whether Apple doesn't treat every customer like a potential criminal because their hardware margins subsidize any potential software piracy, or because they actually have any respect for their customers, is up for debate. 😛
