If you get 4G, how does the plan work? Once you start a plan, do you pay each month? Or just in the months that you use 4G? And 4G can be turned On/Off right?

I don't care about the 4G, I've ordered the 4G model to get the full GPS. I wonder if it also supports GLONASS like the iPhone 4S. I use my iPad 2 in the cockpit and it's a wonderful chart and navigation accessory. Having GPS for geo-referenced charts takes it to the next level. Lots of folks get the wifi model and buy and external GPS, but having it all-in-one is convenient. Anecdotally, I've had the GPS in one plane I fly lose reference for a few minutes while my iPad 2 kept tracking along just fine.

The only reason I'm upgrading is for the retina display. I read a lot of magazines on my iPad 2 and I just wish it had the clarity of my iPhone 4S.

cause ive got unlimited data with att and i like to be connected everywhere. an ipad with no data connection is pretty useless

I have a first gen iPad 32GB WiFi/3G. I only signed up three times for cell service, mostly to use the GPS mapping on the road. I ordered a 64GB WiFi only this time, but my wife gets the original, so if the need arises, I can still get cell service on that one.

Only you can answer whether you need it or not. If you are one of those who mainly use it in the house or in public locations with wifi, than it's a waste of money. If you need to be connected all the time and can afford it than it's worth it. Speaking for myself, I have a son who is on the rowing team at UCLA and a daughter who plays in a traveling club soccer team so I have a LOT of time driving to and sitting around between races and games in places with no wifi, so I use my 3G iPad a lot.

So to tether right now from IPhone At&t u need to sign up for the 5GB/$50mo data plan at current 3G speeds?? Is there another fee besides signing up for the $50 plan. Everyone seems to agree that the next IPhone (Summer months) will be 4G. Assuming u get grandfathered in to the next iPhone tethering plan at $50mo does that seem like a pretty viable option for saving a few bucks and getting wifi only IPad and planning to tether to next 4G iPhone??
