Has he ever bought Apple refurbs? I've had problems with refurbs before, but not one Apple refurb.... Not all companies refurb the same way. Many "refurbs" seem to be nothing more than returns that the company half @$$ed tested and then sent back out to be sold at a discount. I won't buy a refurb unless it has the same warranty as new (many have only a 90 day warranty instead of the 1 year that comes with new).
Just my .02 worth.
I don't want to maintain two computers. Thunderbolt display will let me dock my MBP when I'm at home and then undock to take it with me to school every day. Plus it acts as a USB/ethernet hub requiring only two cables to be plugged in. Fast and easy docking.

Maybe you already have a 27" iMac and want 2 or more screens for the same desktop? Maybe you already have a macbook and don't want to deal with synchronizing your data between 2 machines, but want a big display on your desk?

I have a TBD and love it. It lets me take my computer wherever I go, but still have a desktop experience at home.

Dude. This glossy screen whining has gone on for over 4 years. Let it go. Obviously the masses prefer them.
When I think of a matte screen I think of the hideous 4:3 Dell monitor I have to stare at at work. It's so 2003.

I must LOL at this statement. What happens when OLED surpasses the current display? or 8K or whatever is next? The fact that the imac is $800 more than the TBD makes this thread a moot point.
4k TV's cost over $10,000 at sizes 60 inches and up. It'll be at least a few years before 4k TB displays are on the market. Even when they do it, their release will likely come with scaled resolution settings across all of OSX (and if not, it won't take long for app developers to enable them). If I could get a "looks like 1920x1080" resolution on a 27" 2440x1440 monitor that would be perfect !
If that is the case, you had over 4 years to reply.

Of course! Only two displays exist in the world. Apple and Dell displays. And the matte 4000+ US$ displays from other manufacturers do not exist. Sure. That must mean, only amateurs use matte displays and real professionals use mirrors/Apple displays. Sure.
As already mentioned:
1) 27" IPS 2560x1440 display (other equivalent monitors aren't really much cheaper)
2) Built-in ports so you don't have to plug in other peripherals into your laptop. This is especially handy considering the macbook airs don't come with ethernet or firewire.
3) Uses fewer wires overall, cutting down on desktop clutter
4) If you are using the same laptop for home and office use, cheaper than imac+laptop, and easier in terms of file management.
Quite a good deal overall, if you are in the market for a 27" display.

Is there a sweet spot of finding these refurbed / used? I see they hover around $700 on ebay, and I am not going to get whacked buying one on craigslist
I am using a BENQ 24" monitor and a dell 24", and the Benq, through HDMI is the grainiest thing I have ever seen.

While craigslist is riskier than ebay, keep in mind that the type of person that owns and is selling a $1,000 computer monitor is typically a bit more refined than someone selling a couch or rocking chair on the same site.
Most people on craigslist selling something like this are happy to allow you to come to their home and see it before buying it. I've sold expensive electronics on craigslist and have done the same. I would never sell anyone a product I knew was damaged if they knew where I lived.
Shop around and try to find an honest seller who is just looking to move on from a Thunderbolt or Cinema Display. If they sound uneducated or sketchy, look for another one. Might be worth the risk to grab one of these for $600 and no sales tax.
