Lol, OP, are you okay?

Go look at a Nexus One or a Blackberry Bold 9700 screen and compare it to your 3GS screen. Its 2010...its ALL about HIGH QUALITY...everything.

This is the dumbest post ive ever seen.

Do you browse these forums in your sleep? Are you familiar with shambo or waloshin? How about TheSpaz?

Moving on...

In all honesty, I can see where the OP is coming from. Before I got the Nexus One I thought the iPhone's screen was amazing. So crisp and bright. Using something with a higher resolution is certainly an eye-opener and to be honest it's probably in my top three hardware upgrades I'm hoping for.

I was asking myself the same question,

Looking at the iPhone screen, I have a hard time being able to pick out single pixles like I can on a computer or tv screen.

Its already 163ppi, which is high (was impressive in 2007, now its just high)

I also deleted opera on the first day because of the text when zoomed out.

Safari though still displays the text when zoomed out, but its so blocky you cant read it.

I welcome a bigger screen, but its not a huge deal to me. Maybe I'll eay my words in a few months, and I will love it.

I used my friends Nexius just last night, and didn't really see that much difference. It did seem more colorful and crisp, but text felt the same. Although I was not paying attention to the text, I was messing around with android.

As others have commented, the iPhone resolution looks fine until you use other devices with 800x480 or more. Then the difference is quite apparent.

On the Apple devices, I can actually see each pixel. On the higher res devices, I cannot. Photos look much better and even tiny text is easy to read.

It's like going from regular TV to HDTV. Once you've viewed the latter, it's tough to go back.
Agreed. I had a play on a friend's Milestone(Droid), and while Android isn't for me, The screen resolution was impressive.

This is a legit question. I have seen many on here say that if the screen size itself doesn't change in the new version, Apple better at least have a higher resolution screen.

Why is this? I have never looked at my 3G and thought, man this resolution stinks. In my personal opinion, the iPhone screen has good brightness, and good colors and quality pictures and videos seem very sharp.

Regardless of your opinion that the screen looks fine, the point is that there is better technology now, and technology progresses/evolves. A higher resolution screen is of higher quality, and that's usually progress in the right direction, so what's there to question? It's like saying, well I never thought my standard definition TV was all that bad, so why did we switch from SD to HD TV's?
For the same reason you claim you could never go back to SD TV. You should check out an HTC HD2 or Nexus 1. The iphone's screen doesn't suck, but in it's current state, it doesn't reflect the latest or most desirable display technology available, and it's behind it's competitor's.

I would consider myself to be one who generally has an appreciation for audio and video quality.
No, I don't think you can appreciate quality video if you're questioning why it would be necessary to implement something that performs better than what's currently in use.

So what's the big deal with demand for higher resolution on such a small device that, IMO already has a quality display as it is? Don't get me wrong, you won't hear me complain if there is a higher res display, but you also won't hear me complain if there isn't.

What say you?
So, despite knowing that better technology exists, and that some people might be able to perceive quality better than you or in a different way, you feel that since the screen is good enough for yourself, it's odd for people to demand a higher quality product?

The screen is honestly the biggest thing about the next iPhone that I am looking forward to. I have a 3GS and a nexus one, it's obvious that the n1 is much sharper than the iPhone.
But because of the sub pixel format of the nexus one, it's not really 800x480... And that's quite apparent when compared to the droid. The droid is LCD and has true 854x480 resolution and it's almost impossible to see individual pixels.
The next iPhone, if it has 960x640 LCD will look as good or better than printed text....that's going to be incredible!
Since they doubled the current resolution, all of our current apps will just pixel double like on the iPad, but since it's still a 3.5in screen, they will look like they do now on our iPhones.
Although gizmodo says the screen is smaller, it's such a minuscule difference that it's still pretty much the same size. If you look at their comparison pics, you can see that it's the same size...I really think the smaller casing and form factor are making the screen look smaller to them...looks same sized to me.
