Are you still happy you ditched for Western Digital TV?![]()
Well, considering this thread is like 5 years old, it's not as relevant. Amazon has entered this space, and many people use FireTV devices with Kodi on them (replacement for XBMC) and work great.
So, for me, I have two devices (I ditched the WDTV once I got my Fire TV):
-AppleTV 3rd GEN (or is it 4th gen? The latest one, but not the 4K one) - use mostly for airplay and playing content in my Apple Ecosystem. I don't really need it to be honest.
-FireTV (not the stick) 2nd gen - Running Kodi and Plex, PERFECT for everything I need to do. I have very little content in my Apple ecosystem, and most of it is also on ultraviolet as they used to give you two codes. I also run Plex server on my Imac so I can record live TV using HDHomeRun (my NAS only has a dual core celeron not powerful enough for live trans coding), and I subscribe to Plex Pass to get the DVR. Yes, I know Plex works on AppleTV, but not as well, it doesn't have as many features as the app on the Amazon, and it crashes at times.
Now, you can use Amazon on Apple TV and of course Plex, so theoretically I could try to ditch the Amazon box, except I still need Kodi for "other" streaming services. I know some people have side loaded Kodi on AppleTV, but I'm not in the mood to do all that hacking any more, I like stuff that just works.
