iPad mini Why iPad Mini w/ Retina is a huge threat to Android Phones

Frankly I don't care which mfg it threatens.

Just produce the bloody thing, so I can dump my pixelated low-res iPad Mini ...

Soon!

The Mini form factor is quite nice :)

I know! I was skeptical at first but after seeing it in person, I think it will be an outstanding device once the retina is available.

A retina equipped iPad Mini will blow everything else away when it comes to reading small text on desktop web sites.

That's the lions share of my usage, therefore after enjoying retina on my iPad 4 and 15" MBPr, there's simply nothing finer.

On one hand I'm irked at Apple for leaving retina out of the first release, yet after years & years I know exactly how greedy they are.

Clever too, they took a proactive stance from day one. Going to great lengths to brainwash buyers into thinking "poor Apple" it's their lowest margin product.

Yeah right, suckers for the company line, they regurgitated that "fact" over and over.

No other company can profit take & have their customers brag about the companies money as though its their own :D

I was at the Apple store yesterday looking at iPad mini's.

I have a 3rd generation iPad, and even though I love my device, the iPad mini form factor is just outstanding. The weight, size, and finish is something to behold. I am definitely getting one when the retina models are available.

As more and more people buy the mini's, especially when the Retina version comes out, I think you will see decreased interest in these phablet monstrosities in the android system, because the phablet tries to do two things at once:
1. Be a phone
2. Be a portable content consumption device (web browsing, email, games)

The phablet is a jack of both trades, yet master of none.

Once the iPad mini w/ Retina shows how ideal it is for number 2 above, then we will start looking at our phones as just phones. Which means the "small" screens of iPhones will remain in our pockets, and we will love the "small" form factor for not feeling like we're carrying bricks.

In other words, phablets are station wagons.
The iPad mini is a SUV crossover.
The iPhone is a Porsche 911.

When you have a SUV crossover, and a Porsche 911, there is no longer a need for a station wagon.

But if you're a guy who likes to carry stuff around, skiing on the weekends or after work, biking in the summer, but like the performance of a sedan at the same time....buying 1 BMW x1 beats having to buy 2 cars and aging for 2 monthly parking spaces
No other company can profit take & have their customers brag about the companies money as though its their own :D

Love this line! Haha

Dude, I tried to use the iPad Mini as a phone and you know what? It doesn't freaking work. It's obnoxious to carry around an 8" tablet and try to make calls from it.

Can you run at the gym with an iPad Mini strapped to your chest like Iron-Man's first Arc Reactor? No. You look like a troll.

But the Note 2 is small enough to stuff into your pocket or strap to your shorts and still look somewhat like a normal person working out. You also can't stuff an iPad Mini into your pocket so you have to carry around a sack or a man-bag or a fanny pack.

Even the Nexus 7 is too big. You'd have to wear baggy gangster pants or something. It just doesn't work.

The only thing an iPad Mini 2 with Retina is a threat to, is the Nexus 7 and the regular iPad because it's cheap, it's an iPad and it will have a great screen. (Which it didn't need, trust me.)
The note 2 is still ungodly large for a ****ING PHONE.

I never have, because I don't like plastic phones.

So... You never had a cellphone until the iPhone 4? (That was my first smartphone/iPhone too! I had plenty of "plastic" phones before then.)

The title to your article is sensationalistic... The iPad Mini will never be a huge threat to Android phones. Phablets, maybe, but not phones.

Nor will it really be a huge threat to Android tablets, in my mind, until Apple brings massive changes to iOS.

The issue is, Apple doesn't have an exclusive-lock on "Retina"-displays.
(See: Google's Chromebook Pixel)

Android devices (most likely the Nexus-branded ones first) will eventually use of any "Retina"-displays that Apple adopts.

I still question how much of a difference "Retina" will make on the mini's smaller display. Pixel-doubling, as Apple tends to do, would result in 326 ppi, which is higher than the iPad 4.

The issue is, Apple has trained people "This number is higher than that number, therefore, it is clearly better."

The phablet is a jack of both trades, yet master of none.

Would your opinion differ if the next ipad mini was released with the ability to text/phone on the 3G models?

Why don't we see more 3G devices that allow texting and calling (like the Galaxy Note 8)? My ignorant view on the radio chipsets in these devices is that 'they probably can do it anyway', so why aren't they paying a few more £££ for whatever approval they need to release a telephone and letting customers decide if it's a useful feature?

iPad mini 16GB w/ Cellular Data: $459.
iPhone 5 16GB w/o contract: $649.

See: Price difference of $190.

Allowing the iPad mini to make calls would likely cut into iPhone sales...
Especially seeing as the iPad mini is almost $200 cheaper... And thus, on a phone contract, would probably wind up being free. (As the iPhone is $199 on contract.)

Ignore the contract pricing and subsidising models, I don't think it's relevant to the question (especially if you live outside of the US).

You're most likely correct, it will cut into the iphone sales as it would effectively turn the ipads (no reason the full sized shouldn't do this too?) into large iphones - That's my whole point, they are already simply large iphones that don't allow you to make calls.

I would have thought that the cut in sales would be mitigated by the increase in sales from customers that want a phone with a large screen?

I was trying to rationalize your question of "why."

As an electrical engineer with a focus in electromagnetics, I don't see any reason that an antenna tuned to the 3G frequency bands shouldn't be able to also do voice. (Unless there was a separate frequency for voice signals and data, which could be possible. I'm not entirely familiar with the 3G/LTE standards.)

However, I do recall reading that most cellphones use Qualcomm chipsets.
See: http://www.qualcomm.com/chipsets

Those would probably have an antenna design capable of accessing whatever 3G frequencies are necessary for both data and voice. In fact, I remember reading (probably here on MacRumors) that one iDevice also had support for FM-radio built-in to the chip. Apple just chose not to use it.

So, no, there's not really any technical reason that the iPad shouldn't be able to do voice. Especially considering that the connection required for a constant data connection (think streaming video) would be far more difficult than a simple voice signal.

It's the same reason we don't see an iPod touch w/ cellular. Because it would only serve to point out how high the iPhone (and cellphones, in general) pricing actually is.

You pay a subsidy every single month (regardless of whether or not you've "paid-off" your contract/phone), which knocks that $650 down to a more reasonable (and widely accessible) price of $199.
iPad has no subsidy and is priced less than $650. Apple makes less overall profit from it (which, again, I think I've read here on MacRumors).

I'm honestly looking forward to how T-mobile may affect everything with its no-contract pricing. You can still buy a phone for a down payment with an additional monthly charge. However, that charge is separate from your bill and ends once you've paid the phone off.

I think things would be drastically different if people realized how much the subsidy raises their monthly cellphone plan by. The thing is, AT&T and Verizon love this subsidy/contract model since it keeps customers locked in.

Will the retina ipad run android ? If not.....

Haha. Exactly. I got my significant other a Nexus 7 tablet and I'm really starting to wonder what Apple's thinking.

Android is just so much more open (which does NOT mean less secure) than iOS. You can load pretty much anything you want, and do pretty much anything you want.

iOS is vastly more limited, because it makes sense to Apple's pocketbooks.

At one time, I wanted an iPad... Now I'm like "Why would I get that, when there are better options?"

I've really been disappointed with my iPhone 5 (upgraded from the 4). I had to jailbreak it (which Apple doesn't allow, and has put a stop to in 6.1.3) to be able to do what I want. Essentially, there's not really been any real iOS improvement. (Yeah, there's Siri... but nothing with the interface. And Android now has Google Now, which is an adequate Siri-replacement.)

Android notifications and widgets are so much better than what's offered by Apple.

I doubt I will ever want a phablet. Which means that no matter what iPad I have, I will most likely have a cell phone along with it too. I don't see how any device could fit in my pocket like a phone and at the same time have big enough screen to serve as a tablet.

Zero interest for me with the Note 2. Like you, I'll have an ipad and a cell phone.

What the Mini with retina will probably do is knock out the larger ipads even more and probably lots of andriod tablets too. Lots of andriod tablets don't stand much of a chance IMHO with the Mini 2 retina display if it indeed happens even if the andriods are cheaper.

Yeah because the new nexus 7 with probably higher resolution display and better price wont stand a chance  have whe even see numbers from the ipad mini ? I honestly dont think its selling well.

Btw im typing this from a mini ;)

Can't wait the day when I see ppl putting their Minis up to their ears.

Why is there always this kind of comment (as if the only way to use any device as a phone is by holding it up to an ear)? Ever made a Skype call on a laptop? Did you hold the laptop up to your ear? How about a Desktop Facetime call? Use earbuds plus microphone just like millions of people with smart phones do when they might want to have the screen out in front of them to browse while talking to someone. It works great (I think even better than holding an iPhone up to an ear).

And then there's always 1+ what-if scenarios where the concept of using a mini as a phone too is messy...

To which I would offer 2 points:
  • why not focus on the workout instead of taking/making phone calls while working out?
  • In the money you save by using VOIP plus maybe the $20/month data plan, you can buy your own gym equipment for home so that no one will see you "looking like a troll"

iPad Mini can be a great iPhone alternative in the right scenario. For example, in my own case, I only need to make calls occasionally- when I'm traveling, when I'm away from home or office (which is not that frequent), etc. The vast majority of the time I can stop where I know there is some wifi and make my calls on "free" wifi with the mini. No monthly toll.

Occasionally, I can't wait for wifi or can't locate it when I need it so I might buy 1GB of data for $20 on the spot from Verizon. If I had to do that 4 times a year, my annual "cell service" toll will be $80, as opposed to a Verizon iPhone plan at $100+ times 12 months or $1200+ each year. I much prefer to keep the $1120 in my pocket- even if I had to "look like a troll" on that workout machine (though I actually go with the first option- almost no call is so important that it must be made or answered in the middle of a workout).

I've had the mini since it launched but only had to pay Verizon once so far ($20). I don't feel like I've missed a thing. It feels like I have "unlimited text, unlimited* voice, unlimited data" as I'm pretty much always around accessible wifi (but have that Verizon $20 data as a backup when needed). Instead of carrying 2 devices, I carry just one. It all works great for me.

Is this for everyone? No. But it can work for many... especially if the voice portion of your iPhone use is not that important to you. For instance, if most of your iPhone use is texting & Internet, an iPad mini can be great. And when you need some voice, the right VOIP apps and 4G as a anytime, anywhere backup works great (and saves huge dollars vs. iPhone 3G/4G service on contract over even a single year).

People happy with the iPhone and/or iPhone + iPad with cell service money to burn won't get it. People who like to keep more of their hard-earned money in their pocket do have a great alternative that yields a pretty iPhone-like experience on a bigger screen.

I don't agree with OP that a Mini with Retina is a huge threat to Android phones as the masses will always take the free* phablet over the $329 & up Mini. But some will choose this option over a phablet much like some choose a Mac over Windows computers. No big threat but a good option. If anyone should feel threatened it's AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, etc who like $100+ per month instead of $20 per month for those who decide they can live with the minor difference of service to keep $80+ per month in their pockets.

You are right, it isn't selling well. Except on this planet. Geez, you do not need to see the numbers. iPads are the best selling tablets, guess which one blew the larger ones away?

Nope, the Nexus 7 has no chance whatsoever to dominate when the mini 2 with retina is released.

this is a pretty interesting argument. I don't think anything will replace anything else, Phablets will have a place in our world.

It's actually interesting because we're slowly reaching that point where there really has got to be a limitation to the screen sizes samsung will go to. their new mega is already 6.3" and the samsung s4 is like what 5.5"? Only lebron james can use these phones with one hand, people crave flashy form over function. And who wouldn't, people like larger computer screens, people love bigger phones.

Also, I'm pretty sure iphone 5 will sell more units than the note2, does that mean customers prefer 4" more than 5.5"? No, course not, even the ipad mini will sell better than most phablets. Just buy devices that fit your lifestyle

No disrespect to you but have you ever actually used a Note 2? The phone is brilliant.

+1. unfortunately a lot of people judge the Note 2 without actually using it due to its size, i've seen it many times in real life and also on this thread. I find the majority of them have never actually tried it though which is a shame, as its a genuinely fantastic phone. I say that as someone who has owned every iPhone and every iPad except the 4 and liked every one of those too. The Note 2 is simply different and can't be compared to anything Apple has released so far, including the iPad Mini.

At the moment i own both the Note 2 and the iPad Mini and i simply don't see how a tablet the size of an iPad Mini (Retina or not) can be a threat to larger screen Android phones such as the Note 2. It's simply not practical carrying a Mini or a Nexus around everywhere the way you would with a phone. Phablets may border on the practical size limits for a fully portable and pocketable mobile phone but unless you have pockets like Gandalf then a small tablet is simply way to big to compete with it in that way. The only real "threat" to larger Android phones in the 5-6' range would be an Apple device of similar size.

I owned a Note 2.

I found it too big to be a phone and too small to be a tablet.

As a phone that's with me all day everyday, I would rather have had something smaller and more comfortable.

Back home watching Netflix or surfing the web, I was wishing it was bigger.

After a while I sold it and moved on.

I don't know how you can compare these 2 device classes as if they were one. About all they share in common is there touchscreen devices. Different size, different operating system, different form factor etc

I've owned the lot and simply picked the devices that suite my needs. There's a bit of overlap but you get that with touchscreen devices.
I settled for iPad 4 and galaxy note 2. These filled my needs, the mini was nice, but not necessary.

You're needs will differ.

Sorry, but you're wrong, it's not just about the size and physicality, it's also about the functionality that iOS in itself is missing, so no, this won't happen.

As an Android and iOS user who owns a larger screened Android there is NO WAY IN HELL would I switch to a iPad Mini, I'm happy with the huge display of my iPad4 and the huger one display of my GS3 and I plan on getting either an S4 or Note3.

There's also the price factor for many, with the new Samsung Galaxy Mega phones having gigantic displays yet costing less than S3/S4 and Note2 they will be a far more attractive option than an iPad Mini.

Exactly! I have a MacBook Air & an ipad 4, choosing an android phone over iPhone means giving up the advantages of having all of my devices integrated within the same ecosystem. The advantages of the Note 2, it's screen size, the S-pen make this a more than worthwhile trade off. The Note 2 is very useful to me, I find myself often just leaving my Apple devices at home because this phone truly does cover my mobile needs quite nicely.

I want to lighten my load when I'm out and about, I don't want to have to carry an ipad mini ( or any small form factor tablet) plus a phone. In terms of the cost factor, why would I want to have to shell out the money for both an iPhone & the premium price a retina ipad mini will command? If anything, people would opt to buy a mini with cellular for surfing & just get a dumb phone for their voice calling needs.

There's only one problem...

People want different things.

Your a fool if you think there's not a market for both.

Note 2 sold crazy loads. If there wasn't a market for it, Samsung wouldn't be selling it.

Remember the market is worldwide, different countries, different needs, different people.

Stop with the its either A or its either B option.
