The thingy the new iPod touch has now
The round thing at the back that holds the string so when you put it on it won't fall out your hands
It's better to be safe than sorry
Meaning its better to look silly and be safe then to look professional and be in danger.

Buy a case that supports a wrist strap?
Epoxy a hook on the phone and attach a loop?

I think it's because Apple's aware a lot of kids are getting Touches now and (in my experience) the Genius Bar is packed with irate parents fixing Timmy's iPod touch that he threw across the room. This will enable them to say, "We do provide a loop that you could have put on Timmy's wrist so this wouldn't happen."

iPhone users (typically) know the phone is made of glass and understand the risk of dropping it.

Edit: if you really want it, here.

To me, the loop is one of those features that you will have one of two reactions to:

1) Oh, that will be really helpful to make sure I don't drop it.

2) That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard of and it's ruining the design of the phone.

Better for Apple to test it on the touch first to make see what the general reaction is before implementing it on its prized pig.
