This is why.
There's nothing new on the iPhone.
99% sure.

sorry dude but you are wrong. lets say the update is a mere 150mb, times that by say even 6mil iPhones(which will not happen because everyone will not update at the same time) that would be 858.30 tb approx. So lets say everyone that owns an iphone jumped on at the same time and downloaded the update.........if apple cant handle 858.30tb restricted to about 1mb per second download speed, then they have some problems.

these numbers are rough estimates but by no means are what the actual numbers are. the conversions are right but sizes may differ

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5C1 Safari/525.20)

I knew this thread would rear it's ugly head.

3) The phone part takes up a while to fix...they have to fix SMS lag, reception, call drops, GPS lag, etc.

It wouldn't surprise me if this was the case. Give the iPhone team a bit longer in case they needed it. He definitely isn't happy about all this **** that has happened in the last two months.

There's is no way that they were still working on this on Tuesday. Not enough time to go through full QA before release tomorrow. Its probably been done for a week or so.

Could be server load management, could be a last minute bug was found, could be that they wanted a smooth iTouch launch first just to be sure, could be carrier certifications, who knows.

I doubt there are any new features simply because I'm used to Apple only making the public aware of new features through big media events. That doesn't mean it won't happen, but we'll know in about 15 hours or so.

I also believe cut-and-paste, if it is ever added, will be part of a bigger major interface addition to add a variety of gesture-based commands. That would certainly be a big deal like a 3.0 update, not a .1 update.

What happened last time a big (or somewhat big) patch came for both things the same day? I believe that iTunes died...

um, no.

the only time there has been a problem was when 2.0 came out the same day as the first day they sold the iPhone 3G.

and there are no patches. Each update completely deletes the old firmware and installs a full version of the new firmware.

Because they can

Given the complete no-hype Steve put towards 2.1, I think waiting another 3 days because he said so makes sense. He didn't do anything other than mention it because of how big a FAIL the previous updates have been, he couldn't under-deliver again.

2.1 better rock as much as the Let's Rock event rocked. I want Jack Johnson to play music for me whilst I update my phone, and wait for it to backup for 2 hours first.

Only one reason it could be. It isn't ready yet. Don't you realize iPhone is a lot more complex than the iPod touch? Let's go like this. iPod touch is male. iPhone is female. Male is a lot more simple than a female. :p

Just a note regarding the bandwidth issue comments: all Apple downloads are distributed using Akamai, a commercial content delivery network (CDN). Akamai has a few thousand nodes as far as I know, spread all over the world, at various datacenters, big educational institutions, etc. Bandwidth is *not* an issue with Akamai.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akamai_Technologies and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Content_Delivery_Network for more information.

edit: If any of you have ever downloaded something from Apple while at school (software updates, Quicktime trailers, etc) and have noticed that it was really ridiculously fast (like much faster than other downloads) then your school likely hosts one or more Akamai nodes.

Yep!

Or just that the school invests in a great Internet connection. My university doesn't host an Akamai node but has a direct fibre connection.

I think it's because the event on the 9th was an IPOD event. The iPhone, amazing as it is, is not the center of the Apple universe. The Touch, IMO, is the flagship of the iPod line and I think it was simply a matter of keeping Tuesday all about the iPod and iTunes and releasing the upgrade for the iPhone after the glow of "Lets Rock" has subsided.

Maybe the server issue came into play, but like others have mentioned, even if they released 2.1 for the iPhone at the same time, the impact on Apple's servers would have been far less than on 7/11.

So, like I said above, Tuesday was about the iPod, and the Touch got first dibs on the upgrade. Nothing more, nothing less. iPhone owners just have to deal with the 3 day wait. And seriously, I don't really see the big deal.

The server can absolutelty experience slowdowns. When I was trying to download the "Lets Rock" podcast on Tuesday it was going to take 8 hours and the HD TV Show I did wait for took 3 hours! This totally independent of my Internet speed.

whatever your internet just sucks. did the same thing you did, and from JAPAN!!! and it only took a few minutes.

No, there is no way.

Last I checked, Apple's deal with the carriers is that they have to send it out a couple weeks beforehand (since this tries to improve reception and stuff, I think they'd need to send it out). Maybe they received word on Monday that the last carrier will send their approval on like wednesday/thursday. Then they need to compile it all up for release and upload it to their servers.

Course this is based solely on my thinking rather than facts (other than the sending out to carriers as I believe either Gizmodo or Engadget said that).

I said 99% for a reason ;)

Remember the day the iPhone3G launched and they released the 2.0 firmware for the original iPhone at the same time and the servers were overloaded? By allowing iPod Touch users to update 3 days ahead of time, they are hoping to avert the same disaster.

That's probably because those things got pushed to the back burner for a little bit. People talk like apple's servers are just some "monolith" of sameness. Apple can manage downloads.

You are forgetting that millions of people downloaded iTunes 8 that day and a few people downloaded 2.1 of the iPod Touch.

Nobody is saying that apple's servers can't experience some slow down for all their products. They're saying that this isn't the reason why 2.1 for the iPhone is being done 3 whole days later.

If Apple was THAT concerned about server traffic, they'd have done iTunes 8 on a totally different day.
