That story doesn't mean what you think it means...but there is one sentence that's so unclearly written that it's not your fault.

The sentence that reads:

Eager New Yorkers, some of whom camped out overnight, were lined up at one Apple store which offered the first iPhones for sale Friday morning to be among the first consumers to get hold of one of the pocket-sized gadgets.

Should read something like this:

Eager New Yorkers, some of whom camped out overnight, were lined up Friday morning at one Apple store which offered the first iPhones for sale, so that they would be among the first consumers to get hold of one of the pocket-sized gadgets.
