If you think Apple charges a bit too much for RAM (they do), you should have a look at Alienware's RAM prices...

Just today I bought a new shredder (wow...exciting!) and I was happy to pay $199 at my local Staples (+ tax) vs. $179 on Amazon w/free shipping. I could have saved a bit of coin but made a conscious decision to buy it now. That's not to say I would buy RAM at Apple...I wouldn't...but some people are willing to pay a premium for the NOW vs. later at a discount.

Doesn't Apple only offer the additional RAM if you buy your mac online? Doesn't seem like much of a NOW purchase. You could also buy the ram from newegg and try and sync the delivery date with the mac.

Can be bought separately:
Shop Mac -> Mac Accessories -> Memory... then click on the model of your Mac.

Example:

In short, it's definately not recommended to buy memory from the Apple store :p

Apple get their profit margin by selling many many machines of exactly the same spec. Deviating from this spec means they need to build a different machine, ship it individually, etc - they can't just dispatch one from the local store.

This costs them money. To maintain their margin, they charge more for it.

Don't like it? Put ram in yourself.
