Why is Final Cut Express clipping my video?

Final Cut Express 4.0

i'm importing quicktime videos (.mov) into final cut express to edit them, however for some reason FCE is clipping one second at the beginning and end of each video. the files are from an SD card from a digital camera. the files themselves play fine and full in quicktime itself, but FCE is clipping. does anybody know why? is there a setting i can change? do i need to re-encode my videos?

any help would be greatly appreciated....
