am i missing some thing here? i can get hotspot with MyWi for $20 (one time) and this is since a long time.... why are iPhone owners making such a big deal with the hotspot being offered from carriers now ?

You have to jailbreak to get mywi, something not everyone is interested in.
But I'm with you, I don't know why this is so ground breaking, esp since ATT offers tethering too. I guess I just don't know the difference

Because its actually a true wifi hotspot that can connect up to 5 devices without creating an adhoc network that some devices cannot connect to.
Offcourse with the 4.3 update also MyWi will be update to use those wifi drivers to deliver the same capabilities without paying any monthly tethering fees to carriers.

I guess it's nicer for things to be built into the OS as opposed to hacking it to make it operate a certain way? Might be better for overall stability, I dunno. Plus, not all people are so eager/willing to JB so this would be a great feature for them to be excited about.

thats what i am trying to figure out as well..if we are offered tethering on AT&T then how come Verizon hotspot was a deal breaker for many?

also jail breaking is quite easy for any one to understand i assume

but we can even right now connect more then one devices to MyWi ? correct?

is there any downside to jailbreaking to get mywi installed ?

these tethering charges that I see everyone moan and bicker about - does it apply to AT&T users only or are any EMEA users affected as well? Reason I ask is that in Sweden we don't get charged and the cap is typically +10 GB/month

the reason i asked for the downside of JB is cause i see a 'Moderator' on this site is against jail-breaking so i was wondering ...

No, just one at a time.

Its just US carriers mostly.
Most other countries providers dont try to pull some of the stuff they do here:)

ok thats one good point i see what people are going ga ga over hotspot , but who really connects more then one laptops or idevice anyways + cap on usage

It could be usefull at times when more than one person with an ipod, laptop, ipad and other device could potentially connect when there's no open wifi available.
Also Xbox, PS3 and other devices cannot currently connect to Mywi Adhoc network.

The only downside to jailbreaking is the realization that you should have done it a long time ago because you've missed out on so much.

Exactly.
Once you JB they say:D

Since Jailbreaking is oh so bad, right?

Its a personal choice, and not for everyone.

i dont think most people are "against" jailbreaking.
they just dont have any purpose for it.

used to jailbreak all of my iphones starting with the original iphone but i stopped when i got the iphone 4. the only reason was because a lot of the apps were poorly made and caused issues on my 3GS. however I feel that the quality of the jailbreak apps have gotten better and i am now running a jailbroken iphone 4.

a lot of people i talk to assume jailbreak = piracy. this is not the case. while it is true it opens up the opportunity for people to pirate apps I am more interested in the apps that apple does not offer in the app store.

If you are referring to me, there is a big difference between being "against" jail breaking and choosing not to do it personally

I have no problem with someone who wants to jailbreak
I just choose not to do so myself

You can answer your own question about any downsides of jailbreaking by just reading through the threads here on MR

Since Jailbreaking is oh so bad, right?

Where did you get that impression?
I didn't say anything remotely to suggest that

Most people I've come across want to JB but won't because;

A) they don't know how
B) they're scared of messing up their phones
C) voiding their warranty (hahahahaha)
D) encounter some moral dilemma

But when I show them some of the fun goodies that are available with a JB, it's like WOW! can't believe you can change fonts, use widgets/themes, get better notifications, etc.

If JB'ing were as easy as clicking a button on their phone without encountering any issues from doing it, I think more people would, at the least, try it and see what goodies are in store. I think some people are just afraid, not against, the thought of JB'ing. While others, simply could care less and are perfectly fine with a stock iPhone.

yes i was referring to your reply , i see your point. thanks for clarification . i guess some times you don't have a choice specially if you want to unlock your phone

you know some people have reported battery drain and some apps not working after jailbreaking as well.. like Skype didn't work with 4.2.1 jailbreak before Greenpois0n came out couple of days back . maybe thats another reason people stay away from JB

In the MyWi description on Cydia it says "Create Wifi Hotspot to connect multiple laptops or mobile devices to share your iPhone's internet connection"

I've personally connected two laptops with MyWi.

As for others not wanting to jailbreak,
Some like the ability to update to the latest firmware when it is released.
Some are very happy with the iPhone in its stock form, so why would they jailbreak.

Its all just personal preference.
