In the MyWi description on Cydia it says "Create Wifi Hotspot to connect multiple laptops or mobile devices to share your iPhone's internet connection"

I've personally connected two laptops with MyWi.

As for others not wanting to jailbreak,
Some like the ability to update to the latest firmware when it is released.
Some are very happy with the iPhone in its stock form, so why would they jailbreak.

Its all just personal preference.

i think i have connected ipad and my laptop at the same time with MyWi too

you know some people have reported battery drain and some apps not working after jailbreaking as well.. like Skype didn't work with 4.2.1 jailbreak before Greenpois0n came out couple of days back . maybe thats another reason people stay away from JB

Quite true, there will always be something that doesn't work or some bug initially and that's just a part of the JB process. And judging by all the "HELP" threads on here recently, I'm guessing GP 4.2.1 was a bit of a mess for some people. It all comes back to fear of the unknown though. I think some people come into the JB process completely blinded by their noobishness while others steer clear for the above mentioned issues. As Dawg stated, it's a personal choice. And by choosing to JB then you have to prepare yourself for potential issues.

Like I said, if it were super easy to JB and you knew that there wouldn't be ANY issues by doing it, I think more people would try it.

Another reason that some people won't jailbreak (and why I personally am moving away from it) is that you can't upgrade to a new version of the iOS until a new jailbreak is out. The jailbreak for 4.2.1 took almost 3 months, I think? 4.3 is about to come out -- iOS 5 will likely be out this summer & if I want to go to a new phone, I'll have to wait for the new jailbreak or do without MyWi hotspot ability. None of these are earth-shattering reasons for or against, just my own opinion. My husband, on the other hand, agrees with those of you who think it is pointless to go to a tethered plan when you can just stay jailbroken & use MyWi.

Your husband is right again:)
To some people is worth waiting and holding back for a JB.
I personally would hate to be on stock iphone OS, its just wont cut it any more. And the feature's between 4.1 and 4.2.1 for example were not anything that I was dying to have or use.

The best answer ever....there is absolutely zero downside to JG and anyone who tells you so probably doesnt know what theyre talking about.
Um, where I work there's a HUGE downside to JBing your iPhone. It's called being denied access from your iPhone and having to carry around a separate work BlackBerry.

So now that there is an official tethering and hotspot plan, isn't MyWi just a way to steal what you're meant to be paying for every month?

First people would justify its use, "oh but at&t doesn't have a tethering option with the iphone" Then it was "oh but at&t doesn't allow me to tether with my wifi devices"

There seems to be a lot of people that think just because it was soooo much work to jb their phone and they paid $20 for mywi that it entitles them to not have to pay for these monthly services.

I have no problem with this software existing and people deciding they don't agree with the concept of paying for additional tethering/hotspot charges. But this is not a whole lot different from pirating an appstore app. This thread title to me could just have well read "why are all you people still downloading apps on the appstore when we have apps like installous?" Just getting sick of this attitude around here.. "i paid $20 for mywi, so its all good"

There's no difference IMO.
They're both accomplish getting something for nothing.
Free tethering is ok but instalous is Taboo I guess.
My opinion I dont care what people do with their life and their choices.
Not here to preach, not like anyone cares to listen anyway:)

I JB my phone, but honestly there are a lot of downsides.
I have to wait longer in order to get official firmware features (HRD, GameCenter, AirPlay, native tethering, folders, multitasking)
JB apps can affect stability (modified fonts can cause some apps to crash)
Bugs in JB itself (on 4.2.1 I see an iAd box between every app transition and can not deleted some Safari bookmarks from my home screen)
Having to rebuild my phone every few months.

With every release I get a little bit less interested in JB. Wifi Hotspot is perhaps the final feature for me leaving it locked.

W/R/T to the topic of tethering I think you raise a good moral query; particularly for those of us who still have the unlimited data plans. I just j/b this morning and I plan to get the mywi app so that I have the luxury of tethering on occasion when traveling. I don't plan on using tethering enough to justify paying AT&T an extra $20/month nor do I plan on using tethering to download heaps and heaps of data (i.e. video/media/etc). Even if I did foresee using it frequently, I feel that $20/month for the ability to tap into a $30/month "unlimited" pool of data is a bit much.

For me, there are times when I could check emails and do some light browsing at the airport, etc. on my iPhone. However I would rather do it on my laptop, use roughly the same amount of data and save my eyesight. Considering that I am not a heavy data user to begin with I don't feel bad for "stealing" from AT&T. If their tethering fees were more reasonable then I would consider paying them for it.

i didnt know such a configuration option existed! is this something that is configured on exchange servers or provisioned for company phones?

Haha, this post is spot on in all respects.

To answer the OP, the new hotspot is supposed to be more secure than mywi's adhoc solution. You don't want to transmit credit card data over an unsecured network.

When it comes to jb, you have to keep up with what's going on in the jb world. Otherwise, you update your phone and find out that you're out of an unlock for the next six months. If you had kept up, you could've kept your unlock with a minimum of effort.
There's plenty of lazy people who don't want to do their homework. That's why you'll see plenty of posts from someone who accidentally upgraded.

am i missing some thing here? i can get hotspot with MyWi for $20 (one time) and this is since a long time.... why are iPhone owners making such a big deal with the hotspot being offered from carriers now ?

On thing also is MyWi current at least provides ad-hoc connection so it doesn't work for devices like ps3.

Still I agree I wouldn't pay for hotspot

Because i don't have to pay 20 for MyWi? It's free now!

If I want wifi hotspot now I'd need to pay $20 or wait and pay nothing. Simple enough for me! My plan incs unlimited data inc tethering.

He's probably from outside the US, where carriers actually are cool about the data they give you per month and how you choose to use it:)

ohh ok .. yaa but in USA we pay $20 a month ! which is a lot compared to one time $20 for MiWi
