Some constructive criticism - I'm an editor at a newspaper, so take it with a grain of salt ;) ::

You don't want to give an opinion, you want this to be based on facts. It's OK to let people you interview have an opinion, but make sure the reporting is balanced.

What I would suggest is if you do a story where you actually talk to some students on campus. I would also talk to the school's IT department to get an opinion from a professional. Actually talking to people and reporting is completely different from pulling quotes off an internet forum. If you could take mugshots of the people you interview and turn in with the story that would be awesome.

I would also give them information to use in a chart (every editor loves a breakout). Breakdown different uses for computers (gaming, graphic design, word processing, basic internet, etc.) and chart out information how Apple and PC fare in each category. Again, this is going to have to be based on facts, meaning you'll need to source it. A website would be a decent source for this, just make sure it's reputable. Whatever you do, do not source Wikipedia.

I know this is just a sample, but approach it with the intention that they ARE going to publish it, you want to show them that you can do the job.

Did they tell you how long to write? If it were me I'd give them 17-20" of copy for the main story and probably 6 different categories for the chart.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

For the record, there are lots of games that work just as well on a Mac as a Windows machine. Though of course there are lots of games that do work better on a Windows gaming machine. Though if I was that serious about gaming I would get a game console - a better experience and save some money. In that case the "best" OS is neither Windows or OS X.
Clearly, you sir, have no clue. Gaming consoles use much more obsolete hardware and don't have nearly as much detail in the game as a well-endowed PC. Just look at your PS3/Xbox 360 specs. My videocards cost more than the entire console for a reason. This is 18 years experience in PC-building talking here.

What processor and video card did you use in it and how much did it cost? Just for my info. I still have a PIII sitting at home in my office.
Lol, I'm not sure your P3 can display a DESKTOP at 2650x1600 much less play games. I have an 2500K@4.5GHz with 16GB RAM and dual 6950s (2GB) in xfire. One 6950 has a mild 6970-type unlock. Yes, I can max out most games at 2650x1600. I might upgrade videocards later on, we'll see.

As long as I travel for a living, the MBP is the best computer for my needs and that includes gaming. As I value the MacOS, it's one laptop that does it all, Mac and Windows (W7). There are NO other computer that do this...
Correction - LEGALLY no other computer can. Illegally, there are plenty of Hackintosh PCs going around that can do both. I do agree that Apple makes some of the best notebooks though. Desktops - not so much.
