Why is .Mac terrible?

For the life of me I cannot understand why .Mac is so poorly implemented and unsupported.

Does anyone else actually use an iDisk for anything?

I find it odd (to say the least) that uploading to it from your Mac is insanely slow, the progress meter totally inaccurate, and crippling to your Finder activity.

My question is: Why?

Also, where are these features advertised on the.mac page on apple's website?

I must have missed the part about "useless and incapacitating" before I paid the $99
