Why is Mail turning my PDF attachments to JPGs?

Just tried sending some PDFs to someone and Mail (Tiger) is converting the PDFs to small screen-res JPGs? Why?

I've never seen this curious behaviour before.

When I check the mail that's been sent, the PDFs have been replaced by these useless JPGs.

Have I inadvertently messed with some settings?

check the bottom of the composing window, if you tell it to compress images it'll turn one page PDFs into JPEGs

Ah OK, thanks. I hate seeing stuff in the composing window anyway, would rather view them as icons.
