For that matter, why not offer feature limited version of MobileMe (no storage, no email, # of events/contacts-capped calendar/contacts sync) to get users hooked?

The .Mac has a 60 day trial (no credit card required) that gives you 100 MB of storage (50 for email and 50 for iDisk...or whatever you set it to).

I'm hoping MobileMe does alarms well.

Adding a to-do or calendar item with an alarm on my iMac is one thing. Having that alarm go off on my iPod Touch the next day is another level. That's the kind of functionality I'm hoping for.

I guess i will add my two cents...
I currently have .mac so i will get Mobileme automatically but i am extremely excited about it. Currently, I have 3 computers. A MacBook for School, a MacBook Pro for home and an old Dell that i do random things on in the event I need to use Windows. I also have an iPhone. The advantage to Mobileme is that if I add a contact on my MacBook while at school and then go somewhere with my MBP and i need that contact, it will be there. Basically, if I add a contact right now, I have to plug my iPhone into my computer and sync it, now, i won't have to. The only time I will have to sync it is when I want to add music. All contacts, calenders etc will be synced over the air which will be nice.
For someone like me who used iCal for everything, I find myself syncing my iPhone all the time just so my calender will be up to date. Now instead of daily syncing, i can do it maybe once every week or two just to switch up the music.
This is the main advantage of Mobileme to me and I feel it is targeted to people like myself. Some won't find use for it, but for people like me with 3 computers to keep in sync and an iPhone, it will be a life saver!

you've been able to do all of this before mobileme came out. it's nothing revolutionary. now if $100 is worth it to you because it's apple. then cool. i get it. but i'd rather get the free stuff that does the same thing.

IMAP isn't the same as push.

IMAP only applies to email too...not with calendar/contacts/photos.

So if you wanted the other three on Google, you'd have to use their web application. So MobileMe vs Google is web-based bs native application. That's the $99...for the ability to use native applications to sync rather than use the web.

but it will still have push.

and the other three are all technically possible. even if not currently implemented. which i'm sure someone will do. all those picture uploads people talk about can be done from the iphone to flickr. its nothing unique.

all i'm saying is. $100 is a lot for stuff i can do for free with just a little bit of effort. i cant argue with you if you say it's what you prefer. everyone has a preference. but as a current gmail user i dont see the point in switching. and i dont think alot of other customers will either if they only do a little research.

Of course.

By the way, Apple can control what apps go to the store. Hmm, I wonder if they'll say no to a contacts, mail, photos, calendar app from Google :p.

if mobleme would push my gmail i would definitly pay for it. until then, i'll be fine

it definitely can. You just have to go into your gmail preferences and have it set to forward all its emails to your .mac (@me) address. Then set it to send all messages from your @gmail account.

it's not "because it's Apple", it's because it integrates so well with all the Apple applications and products. Products are more than just the features, it is how well do they work together. If it sucked, I wouldn't use it. for me.. .mac has been a bargain at $100 and MobileMe will be much more so. I have used .Mac for about 6 years. It has always been worth it for me, though it has always been just a bit limited.

MobileMe is to .Mac as Software version 2 was to AppleTV. Take a decent product that is probably most appreciated by a real Apple person and make it something significant that can be appreciated by anyone. And, by the way, neither one cost any more for the people already using the product.

its useful to me very simply because it seamlessly and effortlessly keeps the native applications of iCal and Address Book synced wirelessly and automatically.*

no web browsers. no cable syncing. no 3rd party plugins.

the email is irrelevant to me, but what i will use it for is the instant push email capability instead of SMS for fast messaging so i will not have to pay the extra $5 a month to AT+T for SMS.

*assuming it works as advertised.

This works fine for me currently (though I'm syncing via iTunes and a dock, of course). I'm certain it will be at least as functional with MobileMe.

The thing that will be a deal or deal breaker for me is, if MobileMe will be able to check mail on other email accounts like gmail can now? If it can, just by supplying the account info, that will be good enough for me. I can just have the @me account check my personal pop3 email account, and then it will push them all to my Iphone. What would even be greater, is if we had the option when sending an email from the iphone, we could change the reply-to information. Thus it would look like it came from my personal account when sending via @me from the iphone.

read my last post.

Something tells me Apple is going to be like BestBuy-
They will HEAVILY push a subscription to Mobileme to anyone buying an iphone or mac, because the salesforce will get hefty commissions on these subscriptions.

Thanks for the reply, but that isn't what I am looking for. I am not talking about a gmail account. I am talking about a personal pop3 account. With you response I would have to have my outlook client at home open all the time and be logged into the internet so I could forward my email to the mobileme account.

I am more interested in if you will be able to go into the settings of your mobileme account and have it actually check the email of another account.

NOT FORWARD from, but actually check the email account for new mail periodically.

Gmail has this capabilty. I have a gmail account for the sold reason that it has IMAP. In my gmail account, It has the option to check other email accounts. So I have my personal email account setup in there, userid/password, pop3 information, and intervals for gmail to check it.

Then I have my Iphone setup to only check gmail account, and I get all gmail and my personal mail, spam filtered already and everything.

I am hoping that mobileme will have something similar, so not only would I get my personal email, but also sync outlook calendar, etc...

I am definitely getting MobileMe BUT I doubt Apple will let you customise the "From" line when you send email from their MobileMe mail webapp or from the iPhone. I would really love it if they do enable this, but don't count on it.
As has been discussed over and over again, many people use Gmail only to manage other email accounts (I use it for four email addresses I use) - I never use my @gmail address, but always use one of my existing addresses. (Apparently in Outlook people see "Sent by Gmail on behalf of myemail@mydomain.com - but that doesn't bother me).

um. thanks for the correction? but the site is www.me.com and your address will be @me.com. so .me sounds just dandy to me.

as for syncing. i still dont see what .me offers that other push notificiations wont. i'll still know instantly when i get an email from gmail or yahoo ect. maybe it will be more usefull for a buisness user

there is a great tutorial which explains pretty much all of the basic features of MobileMe. you can check it out on the apple website, and make a decision at that point whether it is for you. If you aren't up to forking out $100, then don't bother.

Does anyone know if Outlook will be able to cache mail, calender and contacts from MobileMe so that I can still access them when not connected to the internet the same way it does with Exchange acounts?

I've never used it, but you can apparently do this now with dot mac, so I assume you will be able to with MobileMe. If you want to SEND from this account on your iPhone, though, you may still need to set it up as an account on the phone, so you can choose it as the default account to send from.

I don't think they've ever done that with .mac, which has the same subscription fee. (Also, I was under the impression that employees at the Apple Store weren't paid commissions. The lack of pressure is one of the reasons I like shopping there.)

That's my understanding. Any changes to information on your computer (or phone) are sent through the server to any other devices, but the information doesn't only exist on the server -- there's a full copy on each device.

I agree with this statement. There will be a full copy on each device, but if you delete something from any of the devices, it deletes from all of the devices.

well apple probably won't let you send through the Mobileme page from your personal account, but I've been sending stuff from my gmail account on my iPod and receiving everything through my dot mac account.

What happens to sent mail in that setup? For me, it's important for my sent mail mailbox to be synchronised across devices, which works fine with my approach of just using Gmail to manage all my emails. I guess I could use MobileMe for everything apart from email and just use Gmail IMAP as I do currently, with a short interval between IMAP synchronisations, but it would be a shame to miss out on the push mail feature of MobileMe.
