Why is my iPad backup to iCloud so large?

I've deleted my iPad backup from iCloud and tried to do a new backup, with only "Find my Ipad" selected and everything else excluded. This still apparently requires 1.5 gb.

A backup of my iPhone with Calendars, Contacts, Reminders, Bookmarks, Documents and Data and Find My iPhone selected, uses less than 0.5 gb.

Anyone know what is going on?

What about the apps that are on it? That's probably where all the data is coming from.

What does Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > Manage Storage > (your device) show?

Ah! Thanks aristobrat, I missed that option. Now I can see where the space is used.

I had assumed with Documents and Data off, it wasn't backing up stuff from applications. So if the data from apps is backed up by default, what does "Documents and Data" cover??
