WHY is my mac SO slow? Screenshot attached

So, my Mac is being very slow. I restarted it, didn't fix the problem. I attached a screenshot of my Mac w/ activity monitor running. You can see that I basically have nothing open. I just have iTunes, a blank page in Pages, and a blank Chrome window open. Why is kernel task (or maybe something else) taking up so much of my CPU? I don't understand...

Yea, I disabled Carbonite and it seemed to stop the problem. It's never done that before though, and I'm only running apps right now that run 24/7 anyways. Odd. Also, Carbonite is compatible with Lion now, so again, odd. Thanks for the links though. At least I know its the problem now.

Well actually, I disabled Carbonite, and it helped for a little bit, but now it's doing the same thing again. 😕

Is mdworker still using lots of cpu? If so then it's spotlight doing it's reindexing thing.

Spotlight isn't indexing in the screen shot provided.
