I have an iPad, an iMac, an iPhone and an Apple Watch. Where/how/when I get text messages is driving me to distraction.

I have my iPhone locked.

My watch is on my wrist.

My computer is awake.

My wife texts me and the computer and only the computer sounds to alert me - fine, that is as it should be.

The text number appears on my Ultra watch face, but I get no sound or buzz - again, as it should be.

Then I sleep my computer, my iPhone and my iPad, and my wife sends me another text.

it appears on my Watch face Message complication, but there is no buzz nor ding.

Any idea why? Wrist detection is turned on, it is not in airplane mode etc?

Since I wear the Ultra 24/7, I would dearly like to make it the "primary" for incoming Texts but see no way to do so.

I would be deeply appreciative of any help in resolving this.

Other people have reported this on here. Wait for the next software updates (more than likely next week) to see if they fixes the issue.

You could also try the usual re-pairing of your watch to your phone.

When I open a text I have received on the Ultra, looking carefully I noticed that next to the name of the person sending the text is a bell symbol with a slash through it. Does that indicate anything to anyone?

Sounds to me that you have that particular contact on mute.

In your messages list on the iPhone, press and hold on the contact/message and you will have an option to hide/show alerts.

Was going to say, as an Ultra owner, my Ultra has been far more accurate with text notifications than any other watch that I've owned. I communicate with friends, coworkers, family, etc via iMessage and it's common to have long drawn out conversations via iMessage and if I don't have an Apple device up with iMessage my Ultra is Bzzt, Bzzt, Bzzt, Bzzt, Bzzt, Bzzt, over and over and over. I wish there was a "hey notify me if I get a message, if X messages come from same person within 10 seconds after that, ignore notification.

lol.

StumpyBloke is right, that's a muted contact. Press and hold on them on your iPhone and turn off mute.

Is this what you gentlemen mean:
Opened Messages.app on my iPhone
Found the incoming series of texts from my wife that are silenced.
Tapped on her name at the top of the messages screen
A bit down the screen I see I had Hide Alerts slider was on.
Turned it off and that fixed it.

Just to confirm, was I making that change in the correct place?

Yep that should carry over to your watch with default settings. Nice.

I think I see how I accidentally silenced her texts in the first place,
At some time in the past, when I meant to Delete a text message from her, my fat fingers hit [Hide Alerts] and not [Delete].

Haha, I was about to post this as a suggestions because my partner had the exact same "no notification for messages" issue recently :D

It's ok if you purposely silenced your wife's messages.. we wont judge. 😂🤣
