Anyone know if there's a technical reason for the limitation?

I’m not sure I understand the title - AW does not use Qi but it is a proprietary solution, with the magnet and such.
I can only guess that was the best that Apple could come up with during development which goes back to probably 2014 timeframe when Qi was not that widespread yet…
Who knows what the future holds but given apples move to MagSafe for the phone, not sure we’ll see Qi for the watch.

edit:
Given the curvy nature of the back of the AW, that seems the most plausible reasons why no Qi to me

Thanks.

According to The Register it is Qi.

The Apple Watch charger that comes with the device is Qi based, but the firm decided not to submit it for interoperability testing,” John Perzow, VP of market development at the Qi consortium, told The Register. “I think they are using version 1.1.2 of Qi, but the software stack has been altered so that only Apple’s charger works with Watch.”

But maybe you’re right - maybe it’s an issue with the shape of the watch.
