I am new to Macs. I've had a late 07 MBP and now have a unibody MBP. Both go to sleep when I close the lid and wake up when I open the lid. Very rarely, when I open the lid, the screen stays black. All I do is hit the spacebar, and the MBP wakes up (I guess it was really tired?).

It has to be a problem with your computer or an application that is causing it. Maybe you should call AppleCare?

you could try but i doubt they would want to do anything for something so intermittent. They'd probably recommend a SMC reset.

I have a new logic board (for other reasons) and sleep is still flakey. I've done all the resets and zap pram, and reinstall OS , etc.

I think mostly, Apple just hasn't been able to get it right for working with ext monitors and clamshell mode. But that's how I use it most of the time. Maybe it's not Apple's forte (like networking & MobileMe).
