why? do you like having to put shoes on everytime you go out of the house?

Seeing that I never untie my shoes to take them off or put them on (and they are laced Merrels), it's hardly a big deal. I think the whole socks and sandals thing just looks ridiculous...that's why it's a "faux pas".

Exactly..
Its just tacky.

whats wrong with being feminine in the first place?

And what's wrong with having over-heating feet in the summer if you're masculine? (I've never heard of anyone saying all sandals are inherently incompatible with masculinity, wow.)

My take: socks with sandals are fine as long as worn under a kimono or yakuta.

On the other hand, in support of the general attitude against socks with sandals, I think the problem is that socks are (or can be) flattering to the legs, but they are not flattering to the feet, and a socked foot does not look particularly appealing either on a man or a woman.

I realise it's an awful look, and I don't do it, but I can see the practical side of it.

There is nothing worse in the summer when your feet are sweating from the heat and you end up with a layer of black tar-like goo on the sole of your sandal and then your feet start sliding around making it uncomfortable to walk. At least good socks would allow your feet to breathe and prevent the above and it's easier to wash socks than sandals.

No trust me it's a taboo. Some people act like it's a crime to wear socks and sandals. But I see absolutely nothing about it that sticks out as fashionably wrong.

Because it looks absolutely idiotic. You really see nothing wrong with it?

If you want to cover up your toes, then cover them up. If you want them exposed, then expose them.

Because you wear sandals when you want the minimum amount of foot covering. You want to feel the sun and the air on your feet, but you don't want to go shoeless. Then you put socks on and defeat the whole point. You might as well were regular shoes. Its just one of those things that is plain wrong and everybody knows it.

It's a fashion don't. Socks defeat the purpose of sandals.

Nailed it.

I'm not a fan of sandals myself. If I'm going somewhere I need to wear shoes, I'll put on shoes (and socks). If I can go barefoot, I will.

it simply looks ugly, no other reason really, and i don' think i would call it a taboo.

SHOOBIES.

*almost* always looks ugly...

....but sometimes it can actually look quite cute, as when wearing quarter-length dark or patterned socks with certain sandals and shorts, and I do purposely break that rule sometimes precisely because it looks interesting. Regular white athletic socks with sandals, however, almost always look wrong and awkward.
