I hate the fact that people use Apple products as "status symbols". I'm kind of interested in the nano, but I'm not sure if 8 GB is enough. And if I had the choice of all colors I would still choose black, but buying a black nano would just make me feel like I want to show off. Why aren't they all available in all colors?

I might go for the 30 GB iPod though. Storage and video vs. durability (flash memory) and battery time... Damn.

you're only showing off...if you're showing it off. simple as that.
annoying i guess for those who want a black in 4gb model or a blue etc in 8gb model.

I'd rather have had the Nano in white... but, it's not going to ruin my day.

Why is there a shipping charge. Clearly your order was over $50

Edit: nvm, didn't see the 2-3 day...

Ya, it's not only costing them upsells, but sales alltogether. I would have snagged an 8gb Pink nano for my wife for Xmas (she has a 1G 10gb iPod atm ), but it doesn't exist, so no sale...

She won't go for anything smaller than an 8gb - for her the 10gb is actually about perfect and she says that if she got a new iPod it would have to be at least that big or bigger, but she loves my nano and she'd forgive 2gb for a pink one... but she won't trade 6gb for it.

So, I suppose she's gonna get jewelry or something lame like that! ;)

If you really loved her, you'd buy her 5 2GB Pink models; one for each day of the week with engraving.

On the MacBreak Weekly podcast they were saying that Apple learned from the MacBooks that people would pay more for black, because black is desirable. So if you want a black, your only option is the most expensive.

Personally I think it would have been better to make the Black Nano the Nano equivalent of the U2 iPod. As in, you can choose an 8GB in any colour except the black is a little more expensive than the rest.

Having said that, I don't see whats so much better about black in the first place.

8gb Nano

I do rather like the fact that the clickwheel is the same colour as the casing on the 8gb model, but the colour is ultimately immaterial, I just want my new Nano!

That's absolutely fine for me! But this doesn't explain why the other colors aren't available in 8GB versions.

On iLounge they have done a dissection on a 2nd generation nano, and it looks like it would be fairly easy (for MacRumors members) to buy 2 nanos (8GB model & the colour you want) and swap the insides, to end up with a silver, blue, green or pink 8GB nano & a spare black 4GB, which you could sell or give to a friend or someone in your family.

awesome! :)

However, IMO it's not nearly the big deal that people are making it out to be. If I really needed 8 GB of storage, I'd get the 8 GB nano in whatever color it was available in. Yes, I prefer some to others, but I can't see choosing not to buy what's most functional just because of a color preference.

Why, why, why? For $50 more than the 4gb, the 8gb is a steal, but only in black? I'm getting a 4gb then

What's the point of spending the "big bucks" for the top of the line model if no one can SEE that you've spend the money. How will you impress your friends? Now if you buy the black one you can be the big guy, the rich dude and everyone will know. Yes some people really ARE that stupid. I'm sure there are people who buy expensive cars for no other reason then because they ARE expensive and everyone knows they are expensive.. Yes some people really ARE that stupid

Also, if flash RAM is in tight supply, just maybe Apple wants to damppen demand for the 8GB model. If it were to popular they'd maybe run into supply issues so they give you a choise of colors ONLY in the 4Gb model so as to drive demend for the 4GB product. Liky the profet margin is best in the 4GB so they ant to make that one more atractive.

My opinion? I do't freeking care about color. OK if I get to choose I'll pick a color but if they only came in one color that would be fine with me. But then I'm not a teen age girl either.

Only Mr. Jobs can give you the answer you want...maybe he didn't want to be bothered with all production of different colors for the 2gig, 4gig and 8gig.

I don't know that they couldn't have easily done that production - I doubt that was the issue. I really do think it's a marketing thing. When they sold the iPod mini originally, it came in 5 colors (remember gold?), and then they moved to 4 colors (because gold was unpopular) and sold two models in four colors (8). While I can see why they might not want to sell 15 (sil/blk/grn/pnk/blu x 3), I think they could handle 11 (silver for the bottom, all colors for the other two) or 10 (silver for the bottom, all but black for the middle, and all for the top).

I hope that sooner or later they'll do colors for the top, but I bought a black nano anyway because I really wanted those 8 GB and didn't want to wait for potentially six months for that small refresh. When and if they do come out with a pink top-of-the-line, I'll probably buy it or wait for an update (i.e. to 10 GB) and buy it.
