I understand that people may accidentally cover or touch the camera lens. However, regardless of where the camera is, people will adjust their grip when then look on the screen and realise that their finger is covering it. Regardless of where the camera is, people may accidently touch it during everyday use. When I need to take a picture, I just wipe the lense just in case.

I think the positioning of the camera may be due to how the internal components are arranged. Being off centred is not going to be an issue except for perhaps macro shots. For normal distance shots, being off centred by a few inches is not going to affect the overall angle of the shot. For macro shots, you just have to check the location of the camera and then move the phone a few inches to ensure your shot is shooting the subject at the correct angle.

People record videos with the camera held horizontally (longest width horizontal with the ground). That way you can record 1080p movies or videos that are wider rather than taller.
That doesn't preclude the camera from being in the corner.

Come on. Get with it.

Is there no user interface guy who studies how people use cameras?
You're confusing "how I use cameras" with "how people use cameras". Stop presenting your preference as some sort of conclusive study. Or provide your citations.

Even regular cameras are sane enough to put the camera in the center.
So now you know better than not only Apple but Nikon and Canon as well?

But seriously, read this statement: NO ONE TAKES VERTICAL PHOTOS if they are serious.
Stop relying on tech blogs for the "facts" on how to take photos. Portrait photos are taken all the time by professional and amateur photographers whether you're aware of that or not. "Seriousness" has nothing to do with the selection of orientation for a given photo.

You're just digging a deeper hole with every additional post. If you prefer the lens centered then use it as your shopping criteria. Don't assume that it's on everyone else's list just because it's on yours. I'm perfectly fine with the lens in the corner as many others are and many of us have no problems with it.

My 4S has the rear camera in the corner and my 8X has the rear camera in the middle. And you know what? It doesn't make a lick of difference because I can take great photos with either device. Honestly, people get so worked up over the smallest things.

Seriously? I am an amateur photographer and have taken "Serious" vertical pictures. Also, although the iphone does take amazing photos, when i'm taking "serious" photos, I use my DSLR, not my phone....

Where's all your so call data/proof?

Many have proved that lots of cameras have their lens at the corner. So your claim is incorrect.

You must be kidding me. I doubt you even know how to use a DSLR.

Why is your monitor on your computer horizontal, not vertical? Why is the movie theatre horizontal and not vertical? Why is the land on the ground horizontal and not vertical? Common sense.

You have one of the most worse 'examples'.

Your lack of knowledge of photography and adapt to gadgets amazes me.

My guess is, if they put the "eye" somewhere else (even if they are able), the phone would look ugly on the Ad flyer. Form trumps function.

My Sony point&shoot lens is also in the corner and I have to make sure my finger is not on it.
