It might be that it hasn't even hit production yet due to unforeseen issues, just like the :apple:TV. Steve puts that date out being optimistic that they can get things finished up and released to manufacturing. Don't be surprised if you find yourselves getting notices that the ship date is being pushed backed.

Apple had announced actual shipping date(s) for the :apple:TV and we saw that come & go.

it hasn't been delayed at all. watch the special event again if you have to. it's going to ship "in a couple weeks" by the "end of september."

If anything, I think Sept. 28th is the 'safe date', meaning they should deliver units by then (and probably a few days earlier.)

Three letters: AT&T

Steve Jobs and the big wigs at AT&T know that the iPod Touch is an alternative to those that want the iTouch Interface, WiFi, and a nice screen for multimedia purposes which are found in the iPhone. Now, with the iPhone price drop due to the all the new iPods, AT&T knows that if the iPod Touch was immediately released like the Nanos and Classics, it would steal sales away from iPhone. Obviously, the iPhone means new contracts and data revenue for AT&T (even it the revenue is shared with Apple, it stills puts up great numbers for Wall Street and shareholders). If they give a window between announcement date and launch date, those price-drop adopters will obviously go for the iPhone, instead of also "considering" the iPod Touch. A couple of weeks prior to 9/5, AT&T really emphasized iPhone sales internally.

maybe it's delayed to give Apple time to add in Mail, Notes, and a camera.

seriously, doesn't that screen look too empty? I hope Apple will put in a few more apps before shipping. maybe to reintroduce the hype closer to the "launch" of the iPod Touch.

+1. In fact, I believe they did that for the iPhone too!

I just HOPE that it's not delayed again...that would anger me.

So I guess 2007 is turning out to be a great year just like apple says. We got new macbook pros, an iPhone, a whole slew of new iPods, and soon we're getting Leopards. Oh yeah, apple tv, too, right? Apple really branched out this year imo.

now bring on the iPod touch.
