If you go on the apple website, it does give the option of In-Store Pick-Up but it says unavailable for pick-up on all models, it's still a slight sign of something, I've been hearing a lot of different shipping estimates anywhere from October 22nd-27th so In-Store date could be anywhere in between then. I have to pick it up in-store because I am trading my Air 1 for an Air 2 so I have to do that before buying the Air 2, Most of the time though, the day that people get their units who pre-ordered is also the same day it comes out In-Store so hopefully the 22nd if people get their units then but we'll see tomorrow.

I think people are just spoiled by the iphone release dates. My other two day-one Macs, and my other two iPads also didn't have a firm date. It was pretty much "whenever the store gets them". iPhone is the only device I've bought that had a firm date.

Here's my serious thoughts on the matter:

iPad's have lost a lot of the buzz they had when they were a new novel product. Apple knew that hyping up a big launch day would have fizzled and it would have ended up looking like a disappointment. So instead they have intently muted the launch event and product launch. At worst the launch will go as expect, at best it will exceed peoples expectations.

It's even looking like the iPad Air 2 is going to be more powerful than expected with tri-core processor and 2 GB. When does Apple ever under hype something?

This is a good way to ensure that no one is home to take delivery of their iPads and also pretty much guarantees there will be lines on friday with heavy return rates.

Eventually you'll be correct that it's a 'slight sign of something'...the Apple website has displayed the "In-store Pick-Up" option and "unavailable" since the day or so after the announcement.

They were asked not to have a release date so that people don't camp out anymore.

Nope. Mall owners do not have to allow camping. It's private property. Just b/c Apple says product X will go on sale at 8am doesn't mean malls have to let customers in at 5am. But they do b/c it makes them $, especially when the the item goes on sale during pre-opening hours or off peak hours. Owners, of course, have to abide by local zoning ordinances, and that can limit camping, but that's a different matter.

1) Malls make a % of the gross of every store so it's in there interest to have shoppers shop at their mall. They aren't going to chase them away unless it's creating a dangerous environment. But as a mall cop told me when I picked up my iPhone 6, Apple campers are so much calmer than the limited edition shoe campers.

2) Camping draws in customers who then might buy something at another store while there. This could be something small like a pastry or bigger like a shirt that catches their eye in the display.

3) Apple is among the best non-anchor draws a mall can have. Apple doesn't have that many big releases that they are not going to tolerate a couple of major campouts each year.

Another poster here got the cigar -- Apple isn't being specific with the announcement because Apple wants a "soft" release. The iPad is no longer a "hot" product like the iPhone based on many quarters of sales data. It's a good seller -- Apple's #2, but it doesn't excite passion. Even Mossberg is bored with the Air 2. Mossberg! Nothing would be more embarrassing for than to hold an Air 2 party and few came.

Ill laugh if the 16gb are out of stock or "very limited" at all walk in stores, but conveniently, have "plenty" of 64g and 128.

After a lot of people with 16gb models had to delete APPS and pics just to update to 8.xx, Its going to scare a lot of them into spending more $$ on a 64g.

Wish I knew what Apples REAL reason was for getting rid of 32g. Bet they have a good one (besides gouging apple customers).

iPad hasn't been the "hot" product in terms of people lining up at stores for it for several years now. I remember when the first mini came out I was at an Apple store early that morning and the place was pretty much empty. Walked out with my mini in less than 10 minutes. I think it's very odd they wouldn't say when it's available in stores. Last year they did but they never released press release with sales figures. Not sure why they couldn't do the same this year.

Oct 22nd 9am Eastern -- so they won't be in-store starting today? Even though people are getting theirs in the mail around the world.

Why would 16GB be out of stock if people are being scared into getting 64GB? Plus we're not seeing that with iPhones. 16GB isn't any more limited than the other models.

No, can't be several years. I had to wait in line for the iPad 3 b/c there was no presale. And here is a picture of last year's iPad Air launch in the UK. Looks line a line to me:

Last year's Mini w/ Retina was a soft launch. No preorder, no sale date. Apple just announced they were on sale the day they went on sale and that they had to be ordered for store p/u only.

Check Apple.com with In-Store Pick-Up option, From where I am currently located, it shows a majority of stores have them available for In-Store Pick-Up.
