Hi,

I currently have a 500gb in my 2008 pre-unibody HD bay, and another 500gb drive in the optibay. I would like to purchase the 1tb 2.5 drive after hearing that it will fit in the pre-unibody's optibay. I search on Newegg below, and I am confused on why a cased 1tb WD drive is cheaper than the WD 1tb Scorpio Blue bare drive?

Thanks!

From my experience, a lot of WD's cheaper external drives (and also many other brands) have the Western Digital SE drive in them, which is not quite up to quality. I've heard the Scorpio series are considerably better than their SE series.

passport drive cannot be removed and used as a 2.5" drive, it has controller integrated into USB.

thats why its cheaper.

How your 640Gb WB Blue performs?

good, right now my system only has 1gb ram in it, i had a 4gb stick fail, and im running osx off my 640 and it runs decent, only slows down when i open enough apps to max out that measly 1gb ram.

i like the disk alot, getting a 1tb though for sure.

mid 2009 ones dont have the integrated controller, that's around when they changed it. maybe try ebay.

mid 2009 ? its 2010 and he pointed to newegg to buy them, so pointing out that the mid 2009 ones have bare drives is pointless, THEY dont have bare drives in them now.
