I can start and keep charging the iPhone X 1cm above the charging station. So, technically, it is wireless charging. Obviously, it’s more convenient to rest the phone on the station then keep on holding it 1cm above. What needs is to increase the wireless range.

Does that affect the charging rate?

Then your internal organs will be fried.

Yes. Seems like it would be essentially living in a microwave oven.

Charging something without the use of wires is by definition, "wireless charging". But I do remember the rumors about Apple resisting going to the current standards due to truly revolutionary, wifi-like charging. Appears we're still some years away from that. It does concern me a little, power getting transferred over the air waves, and me in between them. That can't be good.

So can anyone else with an iPhone X. It's not really wireless charging. Instead of having a small adapter with a cord, you now have a larger pad or stand that still has to be plugged in. I like it because I can just grab my phone without unplugging it. Not practical for travel at all. I said the same thing years ago when Android users were criticizing Apple for not having it. Right now, it's a gimmick. A good gimmick, but a gimmick none the less.

What are you going ot hover over your charging pad?

I thought so to (the gimmicky part). But I to have a wireless charging stand at my desk and it sits at the correct angle that I can glance at it when I see a notification come in and have FaceID unlock to read the notification.

Also it is convenient, not having to plug it in, also it saves stress on the lightning connector.

Asbolutely to all of that.

There was an article on here some time ago about Energous (http://www.energous.com) - one of Apple's business partners is one of their investors...and everyone was hoping that this years iPhones may just have Energous tech in them.

15 feet.

Obviously, the rub with RF / EMF is ensuring the signal strength doesn't enter into the realm of harming people.

What I don't understand, because I'm not an EE or physicist, is if the "wireless" charging we have today is just induction - a magnetic field inducing a current in a wire loop.

Qi charging supports both inductive and resonant modes. The former requires almost touching, whereas the latter goes out one or two inches.

Do you think Apple could come up with a technology that is truly wireless charging? Imagine roaming around your home or workplace and your phone automatically charges over the air. Is that even scientifically possible?

Almost anything is possible, but some things are not practical.

To be able to do truly distant wireless charging at the rates we're used to, will take either a room entirely made up of antennas, or a central power output far beyond what is currently allowed.

Immutable physical laws bind us.
