I think it would be awesome to have all the :apple: keyboards be back-lit because there are sometime that i will start using the computer and it will slowly get dark and i wont have the light on and it would be nice to be able to see the keyboard until i turn on the light .... i think its the kind of thing a lazy person would like...

Am I the only one that never notices the backlit keyboard on the MBP? I've used my MBP and my gf's MB in the dark and generally found that the screen gives off enough light to see the keys anyway.

Don't hate

Yep HoldFast your the only one who notices that haha

I do really like the MB dont get me wrong but you just cant beat that backlit keyboard on the MBP

Well, I'll be damned ;)

Actually, I find that where my hand rests on the 17 is right above the backlight sensor, so when I move my hand to type it adjusts itself due to more light coming in. Probs only happens cause I have the keys on the highest brightness and can notice the changes.

I for one would love to see a MBA style backlit wired keyboard. Even though most desks are lit (as has been pointed out), a backlit keyboard would be useful in some situations... I would buy one for each of my macs in a sec.

Okay, this is probably the funniest thread I've read today. :) I like the backlit keyboard idea too. I can afford a lamp, I don't have sex while I'm online, I have no light sensitivity disorder, I'm not a vampire (or any other creature of the night), and although the Optimus Maximus keyboard is freakin' awesome, I can't see myself dropping that much cash for a keyboard.

I'm off to check out the Logitech.

The question really is...
"Why no backlight on the iPod click-wheel?"
I would find it sooooooooo useful while driving.

I wouldn't mind one, even though my screen lights up the keyboard anyways (+1 for having a white and aluminium keyboard, nothing else on my desk lights up from it).

I've got a Razor Habu mouse that lights up in that uber l33t way and it's a friggin pain. Just looks so cheap. But I wouldn't mind the option of a backlit keyboard, or at least with the option of turning the light off.

it would be cool to have a backlit wireless keyboard.. im not sure what the limitations are, but its a cool idea I wish would see the light of day :)

logitech makes plenty of slim backlit keyboards both wired and wireless

To be honest, a backlit keyboard is just a gimmick, I have a MBP and am buying an iMac. I've used my MBP in many dark lecture halls, and never turn on the keys, the screen lights them up just fine, and it drains the power faster. On desktop or laptop, no one really needs backlit keys, just something cool to show off

I'm sorry, but I cannot comprehend why Apple would make their standard keyboard (wired or wireless) backlit. If it can be done in the MBP and MBA, why not their stand-alone keyboard? Has anyone ever heard of a company which makes such a thing? This would seem like a real plus....

thanks
it is a desktop keyboard if it is too dark turn on a light.

Here is the new Apple wireless keyboard with multi-touch glass trackpad and backlight ;)

I can understand what you are all saying about backlighting not really being necessary on the wired keyboard for desktops, but on the wireless I think it for sure has relevance. Especially if you have things hooked up to your TV and Apple is going to be dominating the living room and entertainment center.

Oops, sorry for the double post, mod please delete the duplicate below. Thanks.

Touch It Baby.

If only mate, if only! That'd be excellent. ;)

I find it annoying that Apple's desktop users are being neglected when it comes to the whole Multi-Touch pehnomenen. I know that we're, no doubt, some years off before a screen based touch screen desktop akin to an "iMac Touch" but having a trackpad built into the keyboard would definitely be a nice step towards the future.

I recently bought an iPhone and hope they bring out the fabled tablet soon. I love the touch interface on the phone and enjoyed playing around with the new MBPs and MBs in store and their extended Multi Touch capabilities. It just feels like we're having all the enjoyment and the iMac, Mac Mini and Mac Pro users just aren't having as much as fun! :D

As for the backlight debate, I found that after I sold my MBP, the backlight is the thing I ended up missing the most. It doesn't help that most laptop keyboards are black coloured and very hard to use in low light.

If you had the wired keyboard I don't think that you would be able to have two usb connectors on it as the keyboard itself would draw a lot of power from the desktop it's plugged into.

I am using the backlit keyboard on my PowerBook to type this post. Do I wish my external keyboard was backlit? YES I DO. A cool mod would to make a MBA body into an external keyboard and mouse.

1. If you're a gamer and need light to actually see the "WASD" keys, you probably aren't very good.
2. The monitor provides enough light for a keyboard. We're not talking super-pitch dark here.
3. Never used it on my laptop -- heck, the freaking monitor is right there.
4. That's what those little humps on the F and J keys are.
5. I'm pretty sure we can all figure out where the keys are. Try it -- air type on a desk a sentence, like "Hello, there!" I guarantee your fingers will remember key position.

For me i use my keyboard as far away from the imac as possible to help reduce the strain on my eyes. I also have screenshade installed to help dim the brightness as even on the lowest setting it is too bright. So a backlit keyboard would be good for for me as my screen doesn't give off much light. Plus it means i can work at night without needing any extra lights on.

Not True.

My PB's Backlit KB draws 40 MA/h

Because it is not apple's idea, that's why. Apple's got a lot of good designs, exceptional user interface, and most people agree with their decisions. But let's face it, they're a bunch of control freaks. If they could lock down the mac like they did (mostly) with the iPhone/iPod app store, and they're wouldn't be a n outright rebellion, they would.

In this respect, Apple vs. Winboxes are like a really top notch cafeteria versus burger king. Great overall experience versus customizable but overall less quality food. Sigh..I need to quit drawing analogies before breakfast.

But I have to agree with you, that would be a cool design. Like the MBP's, if you didn't want the backlighting, you could turn it off.

Hey, I'm now a 68516! Whatever that means...
