Scroll bar works fine for Dictionary, Thesaurus (this is a wield spelling, I just discover this today, it used to be Treasure or something I think) and Apple, but not for wikipedia. Furthermore, wikipedia changed all the items to be capital first letter, so normally the words I'm typing won't find anything in wikipedia except I'm specifically searching on "Wikipedia", not just "All".

Let me explain:

go to www.wikipedia.com and enter the main page.

On your top right corner, check for new features.

Disable the option, i.e. turn off new features. You may need to sign up/sign in.

(Please don't mind megadeth, that's how I check the dictionary app.)

And well, the app goes fast!

That's all. :)

Cheers.

Apple Dictionary Wikipedia fix

I tried deleting dictionary.plist, that didn't work. Did not try reinstalling Dictionary, but here's what did work:

In Safari, Firefox, or whatever browser you're using, go to Wikipedia.org
Type a search term into the search box, hit the arrow button or return key
When the page comes up, click on the "New features" link at top/right
When "New features" page comes up, go down to "Take Me Back" and click
on "click here"
This will bring up a "Log in / create account" page
If you already have a Wikipedia account, enter your username and password
If you don't have an account, click "Create one" link, create your account
After you're done, you should get a page that says "Login successful"
At the top of this page are several links, click "Take me back"
This brings up "Turn new features off page", enter appropriate info
Click "Turn new features off" button at bottom of page
Open Dictionary

This worked for me, hope it works for everyone else! :)

Not "exactly", Wikipedia main page doesn't have links at top. Also, that reply hadn't been posted yet when I first started my reply. Anyways, just trying to help out...

Didn't work for me. But, I didn't notice that Dictionary was open when I turned off new features. Maybe a Restart will do it. ??

Yep, turning off new features in Safari AND Firefox and restarting doesn't help.

We are so screwed. We need Steve Jobs to save us.

Is this worth sending an e-mail to Steve? Hmm...

The dictionary app only shows the part of the article that corresponds with the window. Can't scroll down or up. Even in my new i5, which hasn't been altered in any way.

Resizing or this solution don't work.

Does anyone else have this problem? How do we solve it?!

Perhaps a little late here, but I wrote the earliest solution to this problem last year, and I'm the author of the first referenced URL to a failed solution in this thread. I'd just like to point out that a working solution to the new problem (actually, the same problem... an aside) is on my site too. In fact, I updated that linked article with a URL to the new page. So... why isn't this straightforward? The fix is there. Also, why does Apple still suck so much?

Edit: Here's a permalink to my update on the previous article. It mentions the fix.

Both of these fixes actually work! Sucks that you have to do it every 30 days, though.

Did you guys follow the tutorial at menoob.com?
Yeah, I did, though not from reading that link. However, I followed the steps there, only to discover the new features were turned off. I turned them on and back off again. Still no scroll bar!

I pulled out my dictionary.plist file, but attempting to use "Wiki-Dici" yielded a "Wikipedia Server Unavailable" message.

Hey Gregg. It initially didn't work for me either, until I deleted all preferences referring to the Dictionary app, increased Safari's cache from 5 to 500mb, told Safari to remember history for 30 days, turned off private browsing and most importantly, checked the "remember for 30 days" option on Wikipedia.

I restarted and voila: scrollbars were back!

1. Did that
2. don't know where to do that, looked for it... ?
3. has always been set to Remove history items: After one month
4. has always been off
5. Did that
6. Did that

No scroll bars. Plus, if I click a link in the Dictionary window, instead of bringing up another page in that window (as it used to do) it opens a Wiki web page in Safari.

After you do all of that, when you open the Wikipedia page in Safari, does it bring up a page with the new layout or is it the old layout that comes up? And are you logged in on the Wikipedia page?

If the home page of the Wikipedia page is in the new layout or you are logged off, then that is what is preventing the scroll bars from coming up.

Try updating your computer and then running Onyx in automation mode with all settings checked, including the "clear Web browser cache and history" command. After restarting, clear ALL library preferences referencing Dictionary (there are usually two or more), ensure Safari is set to remember history and the "remove history" option is set to "manually", check "remember me for 30 days" on your Safari Wikipedia page and log in, turn off the new features. It really should work after that.

If by "updating computer" you mean the OS, I'm at 10.5.8 now, and have no plans to go to Snow Leopard any time soon. But, I'll try the other steps and let you know...

And yes, I found two plist files for Dictionary, and replaced both. ....However, com.apple.DictionaryServices.plist was not replaced with a new one. I kept it on my Desktop, where it still sits for now.

Update:
Scrolling is back! Wiki links open a new page in Dictionary also.
I don't know which of the shotgun array of tweaks did the trick, but one or more of them was/were effective.

Some questions:
Is this inconsistent?: tell Safari to remember history for 30 days AND set the remove history option to Manually ! I don't see two settings. I can do one or the other. I prefer to have it set to remove after 30 days (rather than one of the other available time intervals).

Before doing all the stuff in your post #46, Wikipedia was apparently logged out, and "remember me" was not checked, even though I had checked it, and had NOT logged out. Afterwards, I was still logged in. I did not have to turn the new features off, because they already were off.

What version of Onyx do you have? I have 2.0.6 with 10.5.8 Leopard. There is no "clear web browser cache and history" in Automation mode. I did those in Safari instead.

I guess the old Wiki home page is loading. I don't go to that site usually. It's a puzzle globe with language links arrayed around it. I don't know what the other layout looks like.

Anyway, all is well... for now! Is this going to come around again in 30 days???

Yay!!! Glad to hear Wikipedia's now working for you.

I have Onyx 2.1.4 on Snow Leopard. It has a cleaning subsection on its automation menu, which has different options for cleaning the audio units cache, Safari cache, etc.

Fingers crossed that Apple will notice this and we won't have to log into Safari every 30 days...

I suppose I should check to see if that runs on Leopard, and whether 2.0.6 has a "check for updates" feature.

The problems were caused by the recent Wikipedia site refresh. It's not WP's fault though, Apple actually makes the app so they should be the ones that need to issue a fix. Like with the recent YouTube refresh, Wikipedia is so messed up now because of the refresh! I just reverted my settings to the style before (Monobook).
