Can I add to the list of things only the mac pro can do?

For me as a musician I want the Mac Pro becasue:

  • - It can take DSP PCI/PCIe card like powercore/UAD
  • - Has more than one firewire 400 port
  • - 4 internal drives
  • - Space for lots of RAM
  • - The sound of the computer can be away from monitors (speakers) rather than in the middle.
  • - It's easier to upgrade/fix yourself, so if a part needs replacing or upgrading I can just order it myself WITHOUT having to send it away for go knows how long
  • - More than one screen., (Yeh i know you can do this on iMac and Macbook pros but 2 or the same size is nice.
  • - Not so condensed, with is great for portable of course but the mac pro has room to breathe from all the heat with must allow for longer component life
  • - QUAD/OCTO CORE
  • - Front loading usb/firewire ports
  • - NOT a slide in superdrive, less chance of getting stuck grrr ;)

They are some of the main reason I want to get one over my iMac and any other model.

Cheers :D

OK thanks everyone, I now understand why people like mac pros. I wasn't trying to make a point or anything I was just always curious about who used mac pros and why. I now realize that they are good for anyone who does serious work like music or movies as their profession, or someone serious about doing heavy duty computer things. But for the student, or average computer user, the imac, macbook, or macbook pro is a better choice.

One more question...

Does anyone use a mac pro as a server?
In my dad's office they have a big pc (nothing impressive) and I''ve heard of people connecting mac minis to big hard drive and using that as a server solution. But Xserve + Xserve RAID = lots of $$$

Some people for sure do use the mac pro as a server. Its almost the same hardware as a XServe. Just without the redundant power supplies and the other things that make it more of a server. But yes some people probably use the mac pro as a server.

What do you mean redundant power supplies? I was looking for a home server solution to back up my computers possibly using time machine for the mac, but I heard a little about a mac mini server, don't know how that would work, I've seen xserve on apple's website, but it seems really complicated to configure and really expensive. I don't know how much pc servers cost, but maybe a macpro with a big hdd, could add up to the same.
